Modulus Mob

On my 2000 VJ - the EMG's are extremely bright and crisp. However with all the EQ ability it has, it is pretty easy to dial things back so they don't get crazy
My first Modulus was a 94 Q5 w/Barts and the Bart NTMB. I love that bass!
Such an intuitive, useable, wide tonal range, it's the one I play out
the most often. I really like how warm it can sound. And, while it doesn't get as modern as, say, the Nordstrand/OBP3 combination, it can still get pretty HiFi and present. I would imagine, iriegnome, that the EMG is even brighter and forward-sounding with it.

Both of mine have EMG's with the BTS 2 band pre in them, and I think they sound pretty good. The TBX is brighter and zingier than the Q5, not sure if it's the neck thru or the difference in strings (fat beams vs SS lo-riders).

Gotta' get back into playing so I can figure it all out ;-)

Hello Mod fans .Looking to trade my Zon to get back to a VJ4. Going to lose on this and probably regret the hell out of it .I sold my VJ4 to get this and now I want to sell or trade this to go back to a VJ4.I love both basses but can only afford one and feel the VJ4 fits my playing style and tone desires better. The Zon is on ebay and classifieds if you were interested in a possible trade scenario .The Zon neck actually plays easier? not comparing apples to apples there but how that is ? I don't know the Zon just does play easier. Looking for a sienna burst VJ4 with a satin neck .I also wanted dancing girls that like to party and an outdoor Gig at the top of a Volcanoe if you have that lets talk.

Hey all. I'm trying to get my hands on a Q5 after I heard about the awesome string spacing (17mm) and tones (lots of videos on Youtube, etc). My other main competitors for a narrow string spacing 5er are equally hard to come by, but I have managed to glean specs for their necks from various kind souls. So far, I know I detest the Lakland 5er neck and 19mm string spacing, and love the Peavey GV neck profile, depth, width, and string spacing (narrow - 17mm or so).

I'm having to try and buy a Q5 (non-wide version) without feeling the neck first. Always a difficult proposition to get a bass without feeling it.

Would any kind soul be able to measure their Q5 (non-wide) neck and tell me the depth of the neck at the 1st fret, the depth of neck at the 12th fret, and the width of the neck at the 12th fret? [I already have the nut width - 47mm - and width of neck at last fret - 69.85mm - from another website].

Thank you kindly.

Hi Mob. Here's a near mint 1999 Q4 with a two piece book matched transparent Amber-finished alder(?) body, a rosewood (Chechen?) fingerboard, EMGs, and a truss rod. When I first picked up the bass, the neck had a mild but annoying bow. Checking the truss rod nut, it was in the neutral spot which is to say, fully loose. A couple of quarter turns later, voila, a perfect, and I mean perfect, neck! Great player, this one.

Ok, following on from my last post, someone else might like to know the typical Modulus Q5 (non wide) neck measurements - the guys at Planet Bass were really helpful and took accurate measurements for me. This is for a Q5 with 17mm string pitch.

Nut width: 47mm
Width of neck at 12th fret: 63.32mm
Width of neck at 24th fret: 69.85mm

Depth of Neck at 1st Fret: 20.33 mm
Depth Of Neck at 12th Fret: 23.62 mm

Enjoy!

Thanks, Mr. gnome!
Peter, thanks for the geek data! Love it, just not sure what. it means, although I am sure others do.

Mostly, it means that Modulus neck is thinner widthways than a Lakland 5er neck and most other 5 string necks (the exceptions being the older Peavey Millenniums/GV Basses and Ibanezes). That plus the 17mm spacing will make it a comfy play for people who do not like wider necks like the Yamaha TRB5s or the Lakland 5er necks.

The Modulus Q5 tends to have a wider nut, though, compared to most 5 strings.

That part I understand...17mm string spacing vs 19mm Lakland vs other.
What I also find interesting is the chunkiness of the truss rod equipped Quantums vs the earlier, sleeker not truss rod equipped instruments. I have some of each and, if I had to select only one, I would take a pre-truss rod equipped Q5 with either 17mm or 19mm string spacing.
