Modulus Mob

Holy crap guys! That site is full on detailed now! How awesome!

OK, let me express some excitement here, over the fact that (no matter how ridiculously expensive they are) there are some pretty awesome upgrade options available. I mean, we can select any wood top we want, or any of the classic finishes (which are beautiful finishes!) matching headstock optional, we can also choose a KLD top and we can still choose a fingerboard material which is sweet. We can get FRIGGIN MULTICOLORED LED MARKERS! That is so cool, even though it's breath-takingly expensive. Not to mention the awesome new cases and solo bags, hats and other swag, special picks, and modulus tuners/hipshot detuner, and strings. Still no luck on a 4-string TBX, but Holy cow we are up and running.

I think if I were to get bass customized to my desired specs, it would probably cost me around $9k. So it looks like it's just gonna be eye candy for me . Oh well. It's all very nice to look at.

What do you guys think??

Well, technically, all Modulus basses will be custom made now.

Borrowing some terminology I've learned with a few bespoke handbuilt bicycle framebuilders I've dealt with, I think the more correct expression would be "Made To Measure" ...because "Custom" implies that there are options available that the customer can define. Seems like Modulus is simply offering a modest laundry list of options, and then will build that particular configuration upon the order being placed. Nothing wrong with that, it's still a bass made expressly for you, and it seems quite possible that you could appoint a new Modulus in such a way that the likelihood of someone else ordering that exact same configuration is infinitessimally small... but the fact that someone else could conceivably order that exact same configuration means that it's not truly "Custom"

Now, if you could call up Planet Bass and order, say, a 7-string Quantum TBX with fanned frets, a 39"-32" scale length, a Vermillion/Swamp Ash/Vermillion 3-piece body sandwich, three Bartolini soapbars, a Mike Pope Flexcore 4-band preamp, a mother-of-pearl outline of the state of Florida inlaid on the lower bout with cubic zirconia at the Tampa, Miami, & Orlando locations, and no "Modulus" logo visible anywhere on the instrument...that would be "Custom"
