The customer who commissioned us to build this bass loves the look of Mikes TBX's, but wanted to customize his build to his unique spec. This included the first ever semi-hollow option on a TBX build! The tone chamber design and location were customized for a 34" scale. After spending some time with his new bass he commented: "I have never had so much tonal flexibility at my fingertips". And he finished off his review with a gem. "TBX: it eats P-Basses for breakfast!" "

hey there, I am really really really wanting a Modulus q5 with some sort of natural wood top. I have a really clean 1971 Sunburst P bass with a killer A neck and perfect frets. Anyone here have an interest in trading a Q5 for this P bass?

So, I finally completed the surgery on my main player. Used to have Bartolini pickups and preamp. They did sound incredibly good, however I've been wanting to turn this thing into the ultimate Modulus "on steroids" ever since I first played it.

Found a Modulus Quantum 4 for sale that had them in it. Had the cash to go for it so I jumped on it to harvest its organs. The less fortunate Quantum is sitting a bath tub full of ice right now until I complete its transplant. It will be for sale when it's ready.
So a sound review of this Quantum with the Lane Poor's and John East U-retro... This thing has so much clarity and harmonic range now that it's almost hard to believe. It's the cleanest thing I've ever heard while being capable of the gnarliest grind edge to it. So much detail in the upper registry that I have to roll down the tone knob even when the preamp is set flat. And that's with broken in strings! But if I roll the tone down all the way, it is able to cut all the harmonics out and give me a super soft, warm boomy sound. These pickups have a little more magnetic pull than the Barts did, as the strings had a little more buzz when I set it back up. Easy fix though. This is the epitome of a super light touch bass. Yet it still can handle digging in for a nice snarl. Never have I heard/felt it's equal. It's even better than my Carl Thompson in feel and hugeness of sound! Honestly I don't think it gets better than this. Mmmm.... Such a feeling to finally have THE ONE.

"The bass started as a stock but damaged Flea 5. I repaired a lot of damage to the finish on the back of the neck, and then decided that although the bass sounded pretty good, with the great tone and stability of the neck I wanted a more versatile instrument. I purchased a pair of used Lakland pickups from a 55-94 and routed for/installed them along with the three position mini on-on-on switch for the bridge pickup coil selector and kept the original Bartolini 2 band active bass/treble controls, then designed and fabricated a new pick guard based around a combination of the original Flea pick guard and a MusicMan Stingray 4-style guard. I installed the bridge pickup so that the rear coils would be in 70’s Jazz location, with the neck pickup in standard Jazz neck pickup location. This compromises the StingRay tone some but more than makes up for it with the Jazz sounds (if you’re familiar with the Lakland 5502/5594 series basses). Still desiring more variety, I decided to replace the pickup pan control with a three way pickup selector, ala a Les Paul. But in order to still be able to slightly favour the timbre of either pickup, I adopted the idea used in the Fender Roscoe Beck Jazz bass, where a mini switch is set up with a 28k resistor- one setting on the switch bypasses the resistor, the other selection runs that pickup signal through it to slightly reduce the gain, thus favouring the other pickup…I installed one per pickup. I also wired in a passive tone control placed ahead of the preamp, coupled with a push/pull active/passive switch. Lastly, I installed a mini on-on switch to enable series/parallel switching between the neck pickup and bridge pickup. Although a close friend now owns this bass, IMHO it is the most versatile and best sounding bass I have ever played as far as standard fretting goes (I now play a Dingwall Z3, which is the bomb). But the Modulus is the one of my many builds/modded basses that I am proudest of."

I agree on the necks being of prime importance. My first bass back in the day was a Travis Bean TB 2000, then a custom Schecter with a solid rosewood neck and Alembic pups and tone controls followed by an MTD 535 with a wenge neck and now a FU4.

I got to say, I pulled my 94 Q5 Silverburst out for this Saturday's show when we opened for The Wailers.. Man I love the craziness out of this bass. Wow. I put both of my G. Gould's in the closet... This bass is something special. The feel. The reaction. The tone.. I also had the chance to play the opening band's '09 Q5. Very nice, but not quite the same. Maybe because I don't care for the Q5's with wood boards as much..
