Modulus Mob

I reckon that’s why modulus changed the design to take the neck all the way to the pickups in later years but not sure
I think that's true. It's a matter of style. I prefer the neck to not go all the way to the pickup. It takes a little more care, and once in a while, stuff happens. But, by and large it works out.

I was going to say, it can’t be that bad, as Geoff still uses it...

the damage to the Q6 a few posts above is literally superficial. It looks like the combination of the neck corners being a little too sharp, with whatever trauma the bass endured caused a fracture in the surface. Since it's a laminated top, I'd find it hard to believe the crack was any deeper than 1/4". As someone else suggested, I'd just take it to someone who is experienced in cosmetic surgery, and all should be well. While you're at it, have them soften the top corners of the 'tail' so it doesn't happen again.
Hey thanks Geoff! Appreciate the response. Feeling better that it’s not serious because I love the neck and tone

Here is a pretty good pic of the same issue on my bass. However, since mine was originally a SS and was converted into a Q5, that also could be the issue with this bass. Neck is stable. Been like that since I bought her 9 years ago

Looks like you've taken a good first step to converting to an Alembic Series I or II setup!

Finally got my Q6 back together. Replaced the EMG system with some Bart quad coils and an OBP-3. Also added a tone knob. Replaced the khaler bridge with a hipshot. Love it!

I fell in love with Bartolini quad coils after hearing them in the new Spectors.

Was your bridge a direct replacement without having to drill holes?? Mines got gold hardware and I'm gonna swap it out with all black.

It was not. Old bridge was a khaler and I actually set the bridge to far back and the C string will not intonate. I'm keeping it in place just have to find a longer adjutmnadj screw for the bridge.

Nah, all that work was done before I bought it. I don't really care for modifications. But this was my first Modulus 5 string purchase and I got her at a smoking fine price.
I understand. OTOH, I love mods! Putting Alembic pickups in my Starfire resulted in a versatile and

amazing sounding bass.

So I'm looking to swap out the gold hardware on my Q6 to all black. After searching Talkbass - and some other sources - it seems there may be some variations on the hardware over the years and I want to make sure that what I get fits.

Sent an email about a week ago to the guys at BestBassGear, but haven't heard anything back from them yet so I thought I'd check in with the knowledgeable folks here.

My Q6 doesn't seem to have a serial number anywhere that I can find but I was told it was a mid-nineties model. It has no truss rod.

Here's what the hardware looks like:

The tuners I've seen on some Modulus basses appear to be Gotoh Res-O-Lite, but these don't look the same and they are, of course, branded Modulus.

I've read that some tuners tapered off in unique ways and you have to get tuners that match that tapering for them to fit properly - not sure if that's true or not.

As for the bridge I thought about just getting a good Hipshot type A, or maybe a Gotoh and just getting new holes drilled, but I'd like to just get a drop-in replacement if at all possible.

If these photos aren't sufficient or you need additional info just lemme know. Thanks for checkin it out!

The bridge is an ABM 16.5mm model. You can get one off any bass parts store and it will drop in.

My absolute favorite bridge, as an aside.

That's great news, thanks!

The only thing I don't like about the bridge is that there is a screw that locks the saddle in place that has to be loosened in order to set the intonation. So I have to actually detune the string and remove it from the saddle to access the screw (you can actually see it sitting below the string and just to the right in the photo above). It makes setting intonation very difficult. Do you happen to know if this has been changed in the later models?

I don’t like that bridge for that reason as well. But if you use the same gauge strings, once you set it, you should be good forever.

The tuners are just regular old Gotoh GB707s with Modulus branding. The Res-O-Lites are GB350, and if you want them to say Modulus then you’ll have to get ‘em at Planet Bass/Modulus. Hipshot 3/8” ultraligjts will fit the holes, but they’re a tight squeeze on the top two.

Hipshot tuners will not fit a Q6. At least the A and D string. Hipshot tuners won't fit that close together. Trust me I bought a set and they now are on my Fodera..lol. The Fodera GB7's are on my Q6.

Here's a shot of the ultralites. Not only do they balance out the bass, they look really cool too! With the amount of money one pays for these basses, I wonder why modulus would not spend a couple extra bucks and put something lighter up there to make their Q6 balanced.
