not much to divulge. yes, both are tbx5 neck thru's. both gould-era (pre-truss rod). the cocobolo-topped is my "ride or die" but the quilt-top is a close second. it's a "pre-surgery" pic for the quilt top. gonna swap out the emg electronics for kent armstrong dual coils into an aguilar obp-3 preamp. psyched!Oh god I just messed my pants...
Are those both neck-thru? Gorgeous basses! Tell us the details.
Here are mine:
View attachment 3988583
On the left: 1988 Quantum-6 SPX (built for me/bought new) with bolt-on neck, alder body, cocobola top, EMG J pickups, ACG/East EQ-02 preamp, Kahler bridge
On the right: 1996 Quantum-6 TBX (picked it up 2nd hand) with neck-thru, no idea what the body wings are (probably alder), EMG soapbars, EMG BQC preamp, ABM bridge

CS in both spots, always favoring the neck, never solo the bridge not my style
As a general guideline, bridge pickups on bass guitars are typically designed to modify the sound of the bass by manipulating the midrange. The more bridge pickup you bring in, the low mids will go down and then post balanced, the high mids should go up. That’s a generality of course and ymmv. I don’t know that a bridge pickup on a bass is really designed to be soloed unless you’re going after a very specific nasal tone. I say all that to say that I’m not sure that changing the bridge pickup will make enough of a difference to justify the expense of doing it.Hey all! Two part question.
I really love the EMG DC pickup in the neck. I don’t like how the bridge pickup sounds, but I’m not sure I would like any bridge pickup soloed.
-Has anyone gone DC in the neck and CS in the bridge?
bigger question: Do you leave you pickup pan flat or bias the neck/bridge during a gig? How often?
I’ve never tried it, but there’s a few video examples on their social mediasI enjoy the solo bridge on my Q6, (Bart soapbars w/ an OBP-3)but more for specific tones - like if I’m seeking a more trebley finger picking, pinch-harmonic, or palm muted tone, where I’m looking to amplify the sound of my fingers on the string.
My question (and forgive me if it’s come here): Has anyone here tried the Epifani preamp in a Modulus? I have heard it’s quite musical and transparent, has anyone here had any experiences with it? Or how it compares to the other preamps Modulus offers?
Indeed, just one of the many variables involved.Yes their videos are informative. To me the Epifani sounds a lot like the Aguilar setups in the other videos. The EMG sounds more distinctive to me, but perhaps a bit noisier. The Bart pre amp sounds somewhere in the middle. Of course, there are other factors involved.

I have EMGs (40DCX and BQC) in my Q5, and I like them a lot. But I have the Bartolini in several other basses, and I like it as well, maybe it's because I've got a bit of experience with it, but ut strikes me as very neutral, yet very flexible and useful. I don't care for the Aguilar OBP-3, but supposedly I'd like the OBP-1 as it's voiced a bit differently and isn't so extreme.
