Modulus Mob

While I would figure so, it'd seem odd that they'd be put there after the fact (considering how you stated your question). EMGs can be installed at the Modulus shop, so plenty are out there with them already. Are you inquiring as to if someone swapped out Barts or LPs for EMGs?

Some people thing Modulus basses sound sterile, and hold the same opinion about EMG pickups, but neither are absolutes. Even the pairing of both does not pigeon hole the sound into the "clinical" sound zone. Though, tbh, that combo is certainly happy to deliver a hi-fi sound, it is still flexible, reliable, and economical.

Sorry I should have been clearer.

I'm looking to get another modi, probs a fuj5 but I'm waiting to hear back from modulus on a price and what choice of pickups I can get, I know that in the quantum they offer active emg's so I'm gonna ask and see if they can put a set of emg active j's in instead of barts or sd's.

Basically I want a really nice growlly j tone, I dnt think that it will sound sterile, I'm not sure the people who have said this have given the bass a fair go, but I'm looking for advice from people who have the j config fb4/5 or newer named fu4/5 and can let me know how the dif pickups sound?

Andy - Your taste on wither 'French Onion Soup' is salty might differ from my own take on it. However...I think that EMG J are some of the most sterile sounding pick ups on the market.

Your a young guy and I hate to see you spend your hard earned money and not be happy with the product.

I say go with the Bart.

I've tried putting new D'addario strings on my vintage Quantum 5 SPX but they started to taper before reaching the nut, causing rattling. So I tried a new set of Jimmy Wess strings and they did the same too. Obviously the 35" scale requires strings of a longer length. Can any fellow Modulus Mobsters recommend some strings to fit? I prefer naked wire wounds without the silk tapering.

By "silk tapering" do you mean the cloth wrappings up by the tuning machines? If so, can't help ya there...but fwiw, I've been using regular long-scale Ken Smith stainless steel Rockmasters on my 35" Modulus since 1988 and they've always fit just fine.

Yeah, never really sure what they call the textile covering. I hate the way they fray, which is why I prefer non-wrapped. Thanks for the suggestions ethompson2 & Hoover.

Well they are smoother then Steril sounding EMGs and a bit more organic sounding.

You have to think that the Graphite is already bright and has a very distinct tonal character. The pickups are going to make a greater difference then the pre-amp. I think the aggie pre with the Barts would be more of what you are looking with regards if you are looking for growl. I can't imagine you are going to get any growl at all from EMGs, just a lot of topend the does not compliment the graphite...(I have owned several Modulus over the year...again though...that's just my $.02 )

And just to show that there's a flip side to that coin (a twopence coin, presumably)

My Modulus came with EMGs when I ordered it over 20 years ago, and while it's certainly a crisp, clear, "hi-fi" sounding bass, it also gets tons of growl and I've never felt it was particularly "sterile".

Thought this might be the right place to ask a Modulus electronics question. I just traded for a Quantum 5, and didn't have the opportunity to plug it in. Sure enough, it's a bit messed up. It has the EMG BQC (variable mids) system. On the stacked mid control, the bottom knob (cut/boost) acts almost like a volume knob, and the top knob (frequency) does nothing as far as I can tell. This makes me think something's wrong, and the boost/cut is affecting the entire possible range of the freq pot. Any ideas? I have yet to hear back from Modulus customer service, and I'm not sure if the lifetime warranty is transferable, as such. Any help is appreciated before I find myself going preamp shopping :P

I'm 99.9% certain it's not.

im 110 percent sure its not....

im also sure you are not going to hear from there cust...serv ...since you are not the original owner .....go get a lanepoor or something ,.....be thankfull its not a neck issue ...300 bucks and you can put whatever pickups pre amp you want in it.....dont fret...

What pickup is that????????? Where did you get it?

ok this pickup sounds much better than the bassline pickup that was in there ...its like there is alot more depth ...if you know what i mean ....and yes it sounds as good as it looks...i would recommend this pickup to everyone

^ Those are Legacy Pickups. Made by a guy named Henry who brought back Lane Poor pickups (changed the name). I believe that one is just a custom emblem on it. But either way, the Legacy/Lane pickups are NICE

Oh and a question:
I'm looking to buy a Funk Unlimited 4. Either a MM style one in Orange Flake...or a Jazz style one in 2 tone Sunburst.
Any input regarding the latter? I know the MM is an awesome bass, but how is the Jazz?

Oh yeah, guys I am still looking for hi-res Modulus logos...can anyone help me out? If you can make one or I can send you the logo I have and maybe you can touch it up in Photoshop? It is low-res so it has bumpy edges...if you can smooth it out that would be great...was wanting to get some stuff done and I will share with TB. ;-)
