More truth from Dave Grohl

Grunge killed hair metal, the least "rolling" form of rock ever IMO. Thank goodness for that.
LOL! Love it! I was into some hair metal stuff but it definitely ran it's course and needed to die. I knew guys who couldn't let it go back in the late 90's and early 2000's though, and it was a sad sight to see. To each their own though.

Obviously he is a "real" musician, totally dedicated to his craft.
he is right, everyone that doesn't agree with him is wrong.

I wonder how many of his previous albums were made in a high-tech
studio, using computers and such.

I stand by my post, He's just pimping his latest project.
If it helps him sell some more records by going "retro",,,,good for him.

I just don't think that he should be slamming others for doing it "their" way instead of his.

One word, dude (or acronym, technically). LMFAO.

I don't care which way you slice it: love him, hate him, etc.
There are certain aspects of modern pop music that WE CAN ALL AGREE suck, and lack in any heart or thought process behind it. They start with Paris Hilton singing songs about love and stars, pass Fergie singing about her lovely lumps, and end somewhere around LMFAO's party rock.

Their are "artists" that do it their way (crystalline production, processed beats, vocal correction, shallow lyrics, whatever), and there is pure crap that is turned out to make a buck - void of any integrity, heart, or thought. I feel Dave was speaking to that.

You are wrong because he wasn't dissing computers or using technology to record with. As you've said, he has done this himself many times. I'm pretty certain that what he was saying had zero to do with how he recorded his album, except to say that you can do things the analog way, without being able to correct every single mistake, and still be hugely successful because it's not about cleaning everything up, but about being excellent with your craft of making music. I'm not sure why folks are being so obtuse in understanding that.

It wasn't an anti-technology rant, rather a statement that music that is not digitally altered, designed and perfected is still relevant today (proven by the Grammy). The fact that they went analog, was proof that it doesn't matter how polished music needs to be, what matters is the thought and heart that went into it.

Hardly a sentiment anyone could disagree with, IMO.

And even if it were to be misconstrued as an "anti-technology rant" (relating to digitally altered/enhanced/perfected music), what does that have to do with the amount of gear they tour with to play arena shows? I think you're drawing a very big false equivalent here.

Those aren't semis full of heart; they're semis full of electronic processors.

I do agree with his sentiment, but ALL modern music is digitally altered. Enhanced? Perfected? On his words, there's an argument against the use of reverb! His music both live and on CD is digitally altered, enhanced, perfected. Implying that one cannot use a turntable or a sampler and play from the heart is the same as the old men before him saying that bashing a guitar and screaming into a mic was not "real" music nor real art. His rant stank of the establishment trying to keep the young players down.

More to my point, winning a Grammy has more to do with your status in the establishment rather than the amount of heart you use.

He never said any thing about elctronic music being bad. I think the statement was more about over production. It's becoming less about the actual music and more about the producer and finding a sonic "profection" in the mix. Computers make this easy without having as much skill as a musician. I don't think he was starting a genre war or really even calling out any one there. Winning the arward just reminded him that there is still a place for Foo/bands like foo in pop music mabye? dk. Just my thoughts anyway.

Then maybe state of the arts instruments make creating music easier too.
To be a true purist musician, maybe he should be beating on a hollowed out log instead of his DW drum kit.

Yeah, I can see that. However your bass wont pitch correct your playing or edit your rythem so that your in time haha.

I'm only a novice, but even I can make someone sound more skilled with recording software.

Again I don't think the point was that these things are bad. Just don't get too wraped up in them. Play from your heart not just your pc.

I just want hip-hop to die,at this point I liken it to where hair metal was in 1995. Its just making a fool of itself. The rappers aren't putting any effort into it, usually not even rapping or following any rhythmic patterns at all while they talk over sub-sub-par beats with material that consists of talking about their clothes, jewelry, car, punk @$$ bitches, and what girls are doing to his crotch. Just die hip hop, die.

Something will have to come along to take it down, just as grunge did to hair metal back then. What's in the pipeline so to speak?
