Can't forget about this project
Worked on getting a profile into the neck. First thing I do is put the taper in. My new jig is off a tad by about .015 on the thickness from one bass side of the neck to the treble side of the neck. Easily fixed.
Put a little shaping into it....Man am I glad I went back and fixed the ziricote neck. Even with the knots in it, I really like the look. Still have a bunch of shaping to do though.

Shaped out the head stock. Ziricote seems to be an oily wood. On my other bass, I tried to put an oil finish on it, and the oil never really cured. It clogged up the sanding sleeve on my spindle sander in no time flat. Will be starting the finish sanding soon, and I won't put any finish on this neck.

I was using Minwax Antique Oil as my oil, but when the wife started recently complaining about the smell, I looked for alternatives. This bass is an experiment with something that I haven't done for a really long time, and that's a linseed oil finish. More specifically, I'm using Tried and True Original Oil Finish. Its a Polymerized Lindseed Oil/Beeswax blend. It caught my eye when I was browsing StewMac the other day, so I thought I'd give it a try. This stuff dries real slow! The first coat from last friday is just starting to harden up. I'm looking forward to this, and hoping that it works out well cuz it's seeping real deep into the wood. If this hardens up like I think, I'm gonna be real happy.

The stuff I'm using here has too much bees wax in it for my taste. The last time I posted, almost 2 weeks ago, was when I put a coat down. It still has a very waxy feel to it, even though I'm buffing the bajeppers out of it. I have elected to lightly sand off the top layer of "sledge". The pores seem to very nicely filled, and I'm not getting that waxy feeling anymore. Before I do anything else to this one, I'll need to run some tests to see if I can mix 2 different finishing products.

Actually, I got some work done on this bass.
The body is in the slow state of getting a finish. Last night, I sanded in another coat. I let the sledge sit on it over night. It's starting to get a nice look to it.
I also worked on finalizing the profile on this neck. It too is coming along nicely.

I'd say we got 10" easily, and it's still snowing.

Hey, maybe this is the entire season's worth of snow in 1 day? I'd be okay with that.
I'll take it up till New Years Day. My $0.02 >> Ya gotta have snow at Christmas and New years. After that, I'm all with you.
Besides, aren't snow days custom made for builders to stay in and build?
Edit: There is a place about a half hour drive from me that reported 18+ inches of snow

After waiting for this Tried and True Original oil finish to dry, (which it hasn't) I've decided to move on. Looking into Formbys tung oil on this instead. It's shaping up. (what alot of frikin work to get that top layer off)
I was also trying to fab up the preamp. The only solder I could find was some of the newer no lead solder. That stuff sux!! was going to use a Nordy preamp with this, but I found some of my lead based solder.

After waiting for this Tried and True Original oil finish to dry, (which it hasn't) I've decided to move on. Looking into Formbys tung oil on this instead. It's shaping up. (what alot of frikin work to get that top layer off)

Two things good about this project to end the year
1) The Tried and True oil in combination with Formbys tung oil is looking good. The Tried and True oil didn't really fill the grain as much as I would like. I buffed it out with steel wool, and It's currently got a nice satin finish to it. Feels hard as well. I'll be putting down more layers of Formby's. How many more? don't know for sure yet. Pics for the body tomorrow
2) I found a spool of leaded sloder. Yippeeeeeee. Now I can solder up the preamp board.

Put on a couple coats of Formbys. The grain on this is very porous. I thing I'm going to just buff it out as is and move to assembly
