Most annoying instrument (to your ears)?

I don't think the bombarde has been mentioned. And for the bagpipe haters, consider the traditional accompaniment to the bombarde, the biniou kozh, probably the world's highest pitched pipes.

Actually, I kind of like it in measured doses--I like Breton traditional music in general. (And in defense of the bagpipe family, check out flat-pitched uilleann (Irish) pipes. They're like purring cats.)
 
Once upon a time I would have agreed with you. Then I spent time in Nashville and listened live to some guys that can really play pedal steel well. It can be an amazing instrument.
See if you can find anything by The Nashville Bar Association - an all pedal steel band from the 70s.
If you think Dickey Betts is great on guitar, you should hear him on pedal steel.
Dire Straits' "Calling Elvis" made me fall for pedal steel. What a great instrument!

That sounds like a bagpipe in fast forward lol
