Elegance obviously means different things to different people. For me, it's an aesthetically pleasing design that functions very well and has no unnecessary pieces, every part has a function. So many basses satisfy those criteria...All of the Leo Fender designs, Sadowski's upgraded Jazzes, Ken Smith, The Fodera four string yin yang, some of the early hollow bodies, like the Rivoli, Warwick Thumb design....But the Jazz? If people still build wooden electric solid body basses 100 years from now, someone will be building jazzes and precisions because of their elegant functionality. Stingray too.

Rob Allen is in a different category. Great functionality through a limited range, but its aesthetic elegance is undeniable.

I admit to being partial but my Alembic Epic, to me, is most elegant in its simplicity. The zebra wood top seems to get better with age, the ebony fretboard without markers and the black pickups and knobs accented only with the gold tuners and the brass bridge and tailpiece. The beauty of this bass is in its subtlety.

That's a early Teisco bridge..thats how they made them...it actually works great...

I like simple light weight with great sounding pickups..most of these basses are beautiful
but showing up to a gig with one would not be for me...50+ years as a pro player and nothing
has ever felt and sounded as good as this little gem...83' Ibanez Roadstar II RB-600 32" scale...

The top is ziracote. I love the way the cream binding harmonizes the maple board

The Marleaux Diva has already been mentioned more than once. It was love at first sight for me! Finally decided I was worth it so I ordered one a year ago. Got it last September (fast for a custom built! ) and haven't stopped loving it!

My other choice hit me the opposite way. On first glance in Bassplayer Magazine I hated it! It was the first bass I'm aware of that claimed to have applied ergonomics (at the time a new term) to the design. Thing is, i couldn't stop flipping back to that picture! I became obsessed! Finally I got the company phone number from directory assistance (38 years ago) and called them. Cut to the chase: I wound up buying this direct from the builder:

For this bass the luthier and I actually designed it to be an extremely elegant bass. Colours that compliment each other. Soft curves. Headless and light. I submit my Orbiter as the most elegant bass I've seen.

Looks somewhat Carl Thompson inspired, just that the reverse scroll upper horn looks irritating, and the thinnish top veneer, too. Also the Aguilar PUs + 3-band EQ surely are nice in their own right, but in this context?
