Most Elegant Bass That You've Seen?

Thanks a lot! :roflmao: They do seem to be an exceptional bargain, but I haven't laid hands on one. I've been thrilled with Cliff Bordwell's work on my last couple of custom basses, but he doesn't really build anything like the Joker B.

I had Cliff do 2 builds for me many years ago.......at a time when I was playing 35" scale. Both were amazing basses. That said, he's a 1-man shop with an understandably considerable wait time. Maruszczyk basses are team built and the options are amazingly varied.....cost is low because the labour is located in Poland and they're doing reasonable volume. Quality is the same level as Lull, Lakland USA and Sad NYC IME, delivered within 3-4 months.....and he includes the best case candy out there (plush, wide leather strap, promo T, promo stickers). Jus' sayin' :)

What got me thinking about this was this Elrick bass (there are actually two out there like the one below at the moment) which, totally blew me away. Such beautiful inlay work had me stepping back to think about what I want my bass to look like in the future.

I'm not knocking any one particular bass here. They're all beautiful, especially in the eyes of their masters, right? But why do so many of the new foncy, expensive basses look like someone threw brown or yellow or black mud on them? What's with all this 'splatter' effect stuff? Don't much like it myself; these bass designs only look to me as if someone dropped their bass in a swamp somewhere and forgot to wipe it clean... (Hey wait, maybe that's the effect they're supposed to give??) :roflmao:

But if you're going to say that elegance is "graceful simplicity in design that is fit for purpose...", the P basses you posted lose points for that pickguard that extends down to the controls and serves absolutely no purpose other than Fender trying to give it a little bit of design flair since it's otherwise so utilitarian.

Ditto the tortoise shell. You say "ornate doesn't equate to elegance" and yet tortoise shell is quite ornate (that's the point) and it can be a little gaudy (that's the point). I get not liking the fancier basses but calling them "over-the-top sculpture" is, well, over-the-top.

And nothing against your p-basses, I like them.

A lot of time inlay ends up being too much for my taste, but I have to say, the Art Deco fretboard inlay on this is ridiculously elegant!
