While I appreciate technical virtuosity it's not something I need from bands I listen to so much as just music that moves me in some way. And yet so many bands that I dig are listed in this thread: Wilco, DMB, Tool, Battles (amazing BTW), Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, Radiohead, Porcupine Tree, Rush, Modest Mouse, The Mars Volta, Imogen Heap, Arcade Fire, Minus the Bear, Porcupine Tree, NIN, Primus, King Crimson, Pat Metheny, Medeski Martin and Wood.
Some very different bands and all talented in their own way. Which is of course what makes a thread like this both interesting and kind of pointless.
For instance, who else does what JoJo Mayer's "Nerve" does? Perform "reverse engineered electronica" live with jazz sensibilities in terms of improvisation?
No other band listed can do what they do. And Jojo is just a beast behind the kit. Super talented musicians, all of them. But I guess it just underscores the point that what it all comes down to is having enough skill to execute your vision and convey what you want to the listener.
