Mudvyane bassist is badass

Who was using their image as an arguement for not liking them? They can have whatever image they want, but they rely on it too much. Maybe Mudvayne shouldn't be so shallow and actually put out some original music.

A couple of people in the earlier pages. Hard to pinpoint, as this thread is so damn long. Here's your answer:

I usually get bored hearing slap bass with heavey music a lot of times I just don't think it fit's but the way he used it certainly does. He also does a lot of stuff that kinda sounds like he's slapping but he's not he's kinda slamming the strings down with his fingers in different patterns.

Slap bass in metal? "But that's not been done to this extent before!" I hear you cry. But wait...isn't that originality?
You give a bad name to Deftones fans. If you are one, cos the Deftones are all about diversity, and if you can't recognize that Mudvayne are putting out a never before seen style then you really shouldn't represent the Deftones. I also noticed that you name is the only song the Deftones have ever gotten mainstream recognition for. Bandwagon leaper are ya? Or do you just want to appear trendy?
(BTW, I am a Deftones fan. I'm just not a fan of posers:D)

Sorry to say, but guys like him dont deserve to be on the cover of BP... how long have they even been around? How bout some guys who have been playing in a great and musically talented band for more then a few years...sorry, but i believe that you should earn that "honor" if thats what you wanna call it. It sucks that guys like "fieldy", and "sam something or other" from limp biskit are are going straight to the cover, and have all the biggest articles being published about them they arent even that talented!!!. What about guys like Mike Gordon (Phish), Chris Wood (MM&W), or Dave Schools (Widespread Panic). These guys have been since the 80's, and i havent seen them on the cover yet...(Maybe Mike has been once, but not recently)... What happened to honoring and publishing those who EARN it?? I dont care about them becoming more popular, and others dont need to praise them for every single thing they do, but I think they have some enlightening things to say to all of us in the "Bass World". Agreed, you may not enjoy this type of music as much as some others including myself, but enough of the ONE HIT WONDER bands getting all the articles. I think that the guys who have earned it have alot more knowledge, alot more to say, and alot more to teach us young bass players.
Peace
Graham

they want to sell issues of bass player, its one of their main goals, if putting fieldy or some other similar bassist on the cover means more issues are going to get sold, then theyre going to put them on the cover. id say alot of young bassists are inspired by dudes like fieldy or dudes in bands like that, those bands sell records, if you put their bassists face on the cover, it might draw more attention then if you put a more talented but not as mainstream bassist on the cover.

What the hell is your problem?...relax

Yes I do like the deftones. No my name was not sprung from their remix of pink maggit (which is the better version in my opnion, do you agree?) It is a user name that I have been using for some time now on the internet so I thought I would use it here, is there a problem with that? I'm not being too trendy am I? God forbid. I'm really not sure what the last half of your post had to do with the relative topic. I'll probally regret explaining to you why I have my user name when I could really give a rats ass of your opinion but maybe you'll learn not to jump to conclusions about someone that you do not even know (especially when it has no relation to the actual conflicting opinions), but just read two short comments written by that person. And who appointed you judge of deftones fans?

Well, he plays a Warwick Thumb 5 string(not sure of amp setup...look at http://www.guitargeek.com for exact details. He play fretless on some tracks too).
Techniques, slap, pop, maybe tap, he's very good. As for heaviness, well, Dig is the most traditionally 'Heavy' song by them, the rest is something along the lines of aggressive experimental metal. Think Incubus minus the DJ with vocal roaring.

And backtoschool, I was merely trying to point out that you are a hypocrite. Bashing a band who you believe are image-driven after comparing them to Slipknot is laughable at best. Slipknot rely a lot more on the gimmick than Mudvayne, as Mudvayne are real people off stage. Pictures of them with no makeup are in the metal press, etc, while Slipknot do now exist without masks. I admire Slipknot for their energy and live show, but the masks seem to tell of their insecurity.
And as for me being a judge of Deftones fans, I was merely stating the facts. The band want to be known for diversifying, and it saddens me that you can't recognize the difference in Mudvayne's music to the Papa Roaches and Linkin Parks of today. Who made you the judge of Mudvayne?

So mudvayne doesn't rely on image at all? All people are real people off stage, whether they decide to show their PRIVATE lives or not. I'm not saying that mudvayne is a bad band or untalented but I guess I was just not as easily sold into their image. This is what is wrong with the heavy stuff coming out now. It is all formula. Pissed off lyrics plus a scary image equals millions of teens buying your albums. This forumla is used by the music industry to take advantage of kids who are mad at the world (as most teens are, that includes me some time ago). Mudvayne, such as many many others, is an entire album of angry songs. Isn't their anything else the interests these guys enough that they might want to sing about? I have a hard time believing that they go around pissed off 100% of the time, especially when they are rockstars for crying out loud! If they were really true to themselves they would represent themselves as a whole, not rely on a certain image of themselves. (remember, Panterafan, this just doesn't go for Mudvayne, I'm talking about the entire genre). I still love heavy metal with a passion but I tend to disregard those bands who are a one track theme.

backtoschool-It´s true that they wanted to have cool look, but I read an interview where they said that they were pissed off because someone was reviewing their album and started to talk about the paint on their faces. They DO want to be taken seriously as musicians..

Hey BTS,

Man I am a teenager and I love Mudvayne but its not because of the angry lyrics or face paint. Don't get me wrong, the passion behind those lyrics and the visual appeal of the face paint gets me going, but that is not initially why I began liking them. I had never seen them before when I heard one of their songs and fell in love with the bass playing. Ryknow and Spag are really great musicians, and they deserve these good words. What kinda lyrics would you put in a song like -1? or Death Blooms? or Nothing to Gein? c'mon, life may not be all anger and madness but it sure as hell ain't all happiness and flowers either partner.

well, I just lost my train of thought so I guess I'm done! Mudvayne rules!! Ryknow!! ahh!

Its funny that I come across this thread today. I happened to catch one of this bands videos on MTV this afternoon, and then I see this thread. So....

In this day and age, there seems to be two ways to be successful in the music business. Either you have genuine talent (Dream Theater, Joe Satriani, SRV, etc.) or you have a gimmick (Green Day, Slipnot, Insane Clown Posse, etc.). Now, I am not going to base my entire decision of this band off of one video played through a bad TV sound system, but when your thing is to dress up in bad Star Wars makeup and costumes and act angry or aloof in front of the camera, I would call that a gimmick. Maybe they can play their instruments, but if they keep putting videos out like that they are going to go down as a ridiculous one hit wonder.

Even if they have a gimmick, I started listening to Slipknot, Insane Clown Posse and bands like that BEFORE I saw pictures of them, so nobody can say that I listen to them because of their videos or something like that..I saw a picture of Mudvayne before I heard them but I still like their music because of the music:)

It is unfortunate the people see the only two possibilities of lyrics as happy or sad. What about thought provoking? There are tons of things to sing about. Ever read a book that made you think or question something that wasn't necessarily an angry or trippy happy thought, just something that spurred you to think? I'd put something like that in a song if I claimed to be true to myself. Life isn't just anger and happiness, life is full of questions and answers all to be explored, eh.

SilvermaneZ how the hell did Green Day get in this conversation. They have even spoke out publicly about the use of a cheesy gimmick with Slipknot.

I was merely using them as an example of a band that I would considered having started with a gimmick. Three chords and an attitude has been done so many times before that it gets old after a while. Now granted, Green Day has evolved somewhat past that and I give them a little bit more credit, but they still started out that way, IMHO.

Didn't Metallica do that too?:D
And can't angry lyrics be thought provoking? I mean, look at Raging Speedhorn. Absolute anger at being trodden on, but they still have a message to the lyrics: don't get trodden on.

And of course a band isn't 100% pissed off, do you think they could live in the world with that much anger? The studio is where they get rid of that emotion, and on stage. The problem is, a lot of bands today have cottoned on to this and are now making it 'cool' to show your emotional vulnerability(Papa Roach, Linkin Park). This is, IMHO, extremely bad for metal. I mean, a band like Tool, who invented this ****, and wanna show their vulnerability, are getting dumped in with a load of bandwagon starters like Linkin Park, Taproot, Korn, etc. I prefer bands with a more serious message than 'I was beat up on', like Sepultura, Fear Factory, RATM.

I personally know that Mudvayne have a serious message to convey, and this is backed up with their experimentality in music.

Yeah, if only RATM's lyrics weren't empty, hypocritical, and blind to truth in most cases.

Mudvayne I certainly wouldn't call "experimental" band (experimentality isnt a word;)), but its better than most new bands. But I fail to see how they are "experimental".

Don't get me wrong, i like Mudvayne...but I'm missing something here.
