Murder Porn

LOL! That just blew my mind because I have the same exact response. I put it on when I want to take a nap, and I never make it even half way through. It's like a heavy duty sleeping pill.

RE the murder porn title, you might be right. I should have said true crime or something else. That's why I put the examples - I thought that's what it was generally referred to as. We might be discussing 2 different things. Not talking about snuff films.

I think the label you're looking for is Murder Mystery Porn. South Park did a pretty funny treatment of it.

I watch them by proxy---meaning that my wife watches them, so I get it fed to me by osmosis--but don't really pay attention to what's going on. I'll usually be reading while she's watching TV.

An acquaintance of mine is a Detroit Homicide detective, he tells us that these shows are full of it, but she watches them anyway.

HA! I was going to post this almost exactly. I have to have the TV on to go to sleep or my brain will spin all night long. The best thing on to do that is Forensic Files. HLN runs it all night every night.
My wife once asked if she had anything to worry about because I watched this all the time. I told her, quite the opposite. It is obvious I couldn't get away with it, so you are save...for now.

Same here, more when I lived alone. I'd sleep better with the TV on and those were one of the things I watched. There seem to be only a handful of narrators and I find their voices soothing. Other things I'd leave on all night are NASA, Create, Patient Channel.

Lol, the title is a bit dramatic @Joe Nerve, don't ya think?

I'm a big fan of non fiction, & the 'true crime' genre in general, when i used to read more and watch a lot of tv. Mostly because the human psyche and rational for certain behaviors never ceases to amaze me. Pretty cool how they use today's technology to solve those crimes, too! :nailbiting:

Strangely, Forensic Files puts me to sleep like no other show can. Despite the lurid material, it's so formulaic that my brain tunes out within minutes of starting an episode.

Aside from that, I'm a fan of the true crime TV genre in general. Some of it is compelling and well-done. And some of it is garbage, but that's the case with all TV. There are also a few good true crime podcasts that I listen to.

Not sure how I feel about the "murder porn" label, though. Considering that real murder porn exists (something I unfortunately learned via a podcast recently), it seems like a misnomer.

Any documentary hosted by 'that guy with that voice' is just super soothing sounding ... no matter the content. I find oceanic documentaries to have a similar effect

Used to watch New Detectives (think that's the name) on the Discovery Channel 15-20 years ago. I recall it being more scientific. Maybe it's the passage of time. Maybe it was actually better. Not sure, but it was well before the CSI explosion.

I got sick of it. Feels like things have gotten more dramatic. The reenactments used to be kinda funny. The wigs sucked. The acting was worse. CGI was much more basic, so animations were less numerous.

I feel like this is another example of South Park got it right. It's overly dramatic and silly to me now. Has been for a while. So, no, I don't watch that stuff.
