Music Man Caprice: True Boutique Quality

Mine just came in a few days ago and I am more than blown away. I bought it without playing one first so I didn't know what to expect .... Obviously I had seen it online.....but I just had a good feeling. And having been a Music Man guy for so long it was a bet I was willing to take...... In a nutshell..... I was blown away with how light it is! The finish is beautiful (i got the sunburst) it had more brick reds in the dark areas than I expected and I love it. As for the build.... It's solid and smooth....and TONE for days! Mean P growl and j clarity but let me tell you this puppy is LOUDDD! It's somehow louder than all my active basses.
So needless to say I will be getting one to back up this one very soon! Maybe white on white with a maple neck? :)

The finish of the neck reminds me of a Lull Jazz I played at Bass Central about eight years ago. The fretwork is flawless. The neck size reminds me of a Sterling. I am guessing the weight is 8 lbs. The only issue I noticed was a buzz on the open A that I am sure can be easily fixed.

I owned a MM Sterling and I sold it because tone-wise it just wasn't my thing, but it remains at or near the top of my all-time list in terms of most playable, comfortable basses. I was always like, if only they did a passive bass with that neck and body... This definitely has my attention now.

Yes, I was indeed referring to your video! I wasn't very clear on that, was I? LOL!
I'm thinking that if the Caprice can cop the vibe of both P and J, it could replace both for studio work. If it's close on both counts, any slight differences between an actual P and J could be taken care of by a couple EQ tweaks.

Finger and pick tones on the Caprice are very close to a Jazz. The slap tone, not so much, but if you turn down the bass' tone, it can certainly get in Jazz territory. Soloed the neck pickup is pure Precision.

Someone wake me when Music Man decides to make a fiver with normal spacing. Won't hold my breath because it'll never happen. This is no longer a big deal to me because I have custom Sadowsky and Martin Keith fivers (19mm of course) with Music Man style pickups, and they give me enough of the MM vibe to keep me happy.

Mine is working out pretty good.. I put a hipshot on mine like all my 4 strings...
The slap tone is thicker than a J bass to me... and very usable.. the P Pup soled growls ...
