To be honest, I really don't know. I mean presumably if they were so inclined, the donators could sue him for breach of contract (assuming they could prove it) or for conversion or some other kind of tort, but I can't imagine that the monetary loss would be worth the legal costs. I mean this thread would obviosuly serve as a warning for people searching his name, but I wouldn't want to actively start suggesting to his employers etc anything was wrong (it would be different if they did their own due dilligince). I think other than direct moral pressure on him, I really can't think of anything else (unless you are prepared to take legal action).

I suppose you could start a "Mike wheres our money" website, but again, the costs probably wouldn't be worth the result! :)

Edit: If I don't repond for a while its because I am goign out for dinner with my partner as its our anniversary tonight, but you can email me if you otherwise want to discuss specifics about anything i've said.

rgr - thanks for the info so far.

So, I was searching on the word "prudent" and ironically this thread came up.

Still no resolution it seems? It's a good time of year to get it done.

I'm also bumping it because I think it's highly educational for people to see this, because it wasn't the only "charitable" effort going on at the time here and surely elsewhere on the 'net.

As the esteemed Mr. Cole said above, given the way BigMikeW carried himself online I'm only surprised so many people gave money or that Tom got mixed-up in it, but I guess it shows y'all have good hearts.

Talkbass put the fork in donation threads after this got started, but before it went downhill. I imagine paul (owner) didn't/doesn't want the site as an entity to get caught up in a mess like this.

Mike

That reminds me. I'm also posting to remind the mods that Jeff (supposed recipient) was a mod at the time and posted some of his concerns in the admin forum when the debate was going on whether to shut down charity solicitations on the site. I recall Jeff being very upset that his name and situation had been used, then it was going down as it did. Anyway, some important/relevant info might be found there, FYI, if more effort is to be put into sorting this out. And good on him for taking the stand he did. It wasn't easy, especilly in his situation. I agree with Cheezewiz that he seems deserving.

Kudos you you all, by the way, especially JuniorKimbrough for sticking with it. That isn't easy, just as it wasn't easy for people to speak out publicly against charity threads at the time. In hindsight, that type of action was very charitable since more good people would have lost their money had an end not been put to the various public and private solicitations that were going on at the time.

Yeah, lesson learned, I guess. :hmm:

I'll have this thing officially off the books as an Ohio not for profit corporation by year's end, and we can talk in January about how to divvy up the remaining funds.

Tom.
