I totally relate. I decided to list my Sterling and keep my Big Al. Will probably regret it later, I know.
I know the feeling...that's why I got rid of my other basses and bought a second Big Al!
Yeah, True Gold has a really nice sparkle. My photography skills don't do it justice.

Of all of the Musicman basses, I'm probably least familiar with the Sterling. Inherently there is less treble and high mids and more low mids compared to the Big Al H. A lot of that has to do with the use of Mahogany for the body wood. Its still an aggressive sounding bass, but its a bit smoother IMO.
Can any general comments on the sound be made to compare a Sterling HH with a Big Al SSS? Looking to dive into the musicman world and both seem intriguing.
To me, the Sterling HH has a more aggressive tone than the Big Al SSS. I love that sound live, but in my opinion the Big Al will be a better bass for studio work. I especially like the option to go passive direct into a high quality studio preamp to get a very rich recorded tone. And the 18-volt preamp is a little more open sounding.

I think Big Al looks pretty damned cool - and I thought that the first time I ever saw one when they were first introduced at the NAMM show in Nashville. Who knows? Maybe they even sound good?
I'll never get over the fact that I think these guys are just a little ugly

ugly's in the eye of the beholder. Every time I pull one out to play, people say "what's that" then I start playing, and its "woah".
I'll soon be joining the Big Al ranks. By the middle of next week I should have my Big Al 5SSS, white/rosewood. I'll admit when I first saw it it did nothing for me but after watching Ed Friedlands demo video I had to have it. If anyone missed it...

I love the neck joint and the 8 different pickup possibilities! The 4-band eq is nice too. I really like where the high-mid control is voiced.

Ironically, I'm the least bit enthused at the moment about my Big Al. It has a serious dead spot on the 7th fret G-string that no amount of tweaking or weight addition will seem to fix. Bummer, I really loved that bass.
If I sell this one and reorder another, do you think it's still safe to go with a maple fretboard (seeing as I live in CO now) or should I play it safe and get rosewood?
