Hey guys, I posted about this bass a while back...

Just got this bass back from the doctor (Glaser Instruments).

It had almost everything done to it. More specifically- fingerboard planing, refret, fingerboard refin, Plek dress. I also replaced the mute system on the bridge, even though there's a .0001% chance I'll ever actually use it.
I put .40-.95 Sunbeams on it. There was also a rubber stamp of what I'm guessing may have been somebody's band name on the headstock. Took care of that too.

It feels, plays, and sounds great, and I think it's beautiful.

Still working on some electronic issues. Had to replace the jack and a badly gnarled volume pot which looked like it took a massive smack at some point. All I have to do now is get the pickup selector toggle replaced, as it has worn out as well. That should take care of everything.

This bass has seemingly been the victim of a lot of abuse and a few bad ideas somewhere over the course of its 35 years on Earth.

Anyway, the important part- pix:

Well I'm having a problem with the G tuner on my new Sabre. It's eating strings. I've tried 5 D'daddario Chromes, and they all break as I'm tuning up and I can see the wrap getting stripped off the string. I tried filing down the edges of the hole and inside the hole itself and it doesn't seem to work. I finally got one to tune up, but the wrap is stripped a bit and I know if ever I need to take the string off or detension it, it's just going to weaken it more. I talked to Jason at Bass Strings Online and he says this is a known issue with Musicman G tuners, that they eat strings like crazy.

Thoughts?

I've had that problem with Chromes, but never with the tuner post on a Musicman bass.

It was the same bass. G string each time. I can't remember which bass exactly (I have a stable of them) because it was a few years back. I'm confident it was an issue with the strings, but I could definitely be wrong.

Well they're sending me a new tuner, so I'll see if that fixes it. Someone in a separate thread suggested I try more wraps because of something to do with how the tuners are designed.

Well I got my tuners replaced with Hipshots. No more string slipping, though I'm disappointed that I even had this issue, but after breaking 6 strings, obviously something was flawed with my tuner. I did get a replacement from Musicman but I'll sleep better at night knowing I have a set that I know there won't be any issues with.

Though I had a senior moment and when I was unscrewing the first tuner (I started with the G), I wasn't paying attention and did the E instead...while it was at tension. Needless to say I have a ding in the headstock by the tuner peg for my stupidity. Well that gets the first bump out of the way.

While I was switching tuners I put on some GHS Precision Flats. These are actually perfect on this bass if you want something that is a little less aggressive and more towards old school thump. I'm definitely in P territory now, though I can still get some growl on the back pickup by boosting the treble. I'm a happy guy with these strings.
