built this several months ago....it's heavy over 9lbs...jazz neck i had since the early 80's, plays like butter, but the most noticeable thing is the sound of the MM pickup, first time using one in a build...such clarity and attack, strung with medium flats...it's one thumpy beast!

Last year I picked up a UniVox HiFlier Mosrite copy and it became my favourite gigging bass. Super light , flats , sounds gorgeous. Nice instrument to play. Short scale.
I just picked up a Gretsch G5123B and things might change. The Gretsch is med scale , and with the bridge position set about 1/3 of the way into the body , is … huge. And fairly deep , it’s a big bass. Neck is comfortably chunky , TVJones pickups ,floating bridge so it’s not got the instant comfort quality I found on the Flier. But it has a wonderful deep woody thump , and it’s a gorgeous big ass orange Gretsch.
I’m in love.

I play all 6 on a regular basis. The past 2 months, I have been in a Joni Mitchell/Jaco mood. This one gets the most attention. I also like it for playing along with the Charlie Brown Thanks Giving and Christmas soundtracks.

That fingerboard looks fabulous! What a beauty.

I had taken a 15 year break from bass and got back to it 2 years ago with this bass. I had saved some money and Gary has the best fretless bass tone I've ever heard. My other 2 basses are in a neglected state and need some TLC to be playable again. But I just don't have a reason to do that as I want to focus on getting good at fretless at the moment.

It would have to be this one. Had it around ten years or so and it's been on every gig since then. It only goes in a case on it's way to and from rehearsals and gigs, otherwise it follows me round the house ready to be played!
As to why; it looks great, sounds great and plays beautifully! Hands down my favourite neck ever - no contest. It was also a very satisfying and long awaited scratch to a decades long itch!
(I am being seduced by the idea of an Alembic Epic, though...)

My number one is my Franken Bacchus/Warmoth. Lightweight, resonant, cuts in the mix and with a very good playability. Added some Lindy Fralins 5% overwound pickups and EB cobalt flats and it really sounds like a 70's p bass so it fits perfectly with my 80's songs I play most of the time. A rythme machine.
