My first multiscale (experimental)

Sorry, got distracted building a new neck for an old Teisco violin bass. My mom (a new convert to the wonderful wacky world of bass playing) wanted a 2nd bass, and I thought this would do well for her:

Back to the multi this weekend. I decided to use the drop top, mostly to get a bit more thickness in the body wings, in case I want to install a John East BTB-01 preamp. So I cut out the top and bottom wings from the weird-ass pieces of mystery maple (this stuff smells pretty terrible when cut), glued up the top one and shaped it,

Routed some wiring channels in the lower one,

I’m thinking a trans black for this one. The mystery maple has some nice figuring, but a weird “putty grey” color, and I think I’d just like to de-emphasize it. It’s a bit creepy, to be frank...

I kinda want to see what the figure looks like wet. Any chance of a "preview" with acetone or something?

As for stinky, weird maple, that's what the WBO wood was for me. Typically I like the smell of cut maple, but every once in a while, there's a weird piece. Don't get me started on basswood either... :vomit:

I haven’t decided if I hate “bigly” yet or not, it has a kind of brainless appeal, but I’m guessing it won’t last. My wife and I maintain a list of most loathed current words and phrases, the current reigning champ is “Carefully Curated”, which sets my teeth on edge instantly. For some reason, almost anything Gwyneth Paltrow says makes it to high in our list, maybe we are just Evil People.

I loathe bigly because of where it came from, but I like it because of how absurdly dumb it is.
I suggest we leave it there, lest we get political.

Where were we?

Oh yes - neck carving.

The initial carve went well. Except it was really really really thick. So I kept at it with the Shinto, but that maple is tough stuff.

After about four or five more sessions of neck carving (with some other non-multi-scale medium-scale fretless activity headless Tele in between), I was finally able to get it down to 7/8" thick at the first fret and 15/16" at the fifteenth fret. That's about 22mm and 23.5mm for those of you who live in a sane part of the world. :wacky: The super-thick fretboard didn't help...

So, with the final carve done over this past weekend, I stole a few hours from the boss today and got the body wings thicknessed, the S contours done, and rough sanded. They don't look quite as crappy now as they did before; hopefully that trend will continue. :bag:

Now I think I'm ready to actually glue the body wings on. But before I do, I'm going to have a time-out so I can make double triple sure that I've done everything I need to do before they're permanently attached:
  • frets installed - check
  • fret ends dressed - check
  • side dots done - check
  • neck carve done - check
  • body wings sanded - check
  • excess neck-thru trimmed at the bridge end - check

Bigly and the Grain Poppers would make a good band name.
