My friends a idiot

As Tinindian states, the issue becomes when you sell it. Too many threads here about people taking Squiers or parts basses and putting counterfeit "Fender" stickers on them, not to mention the almost daily "is this bass authentic" threads.

My three suggestions:

1. Don't put a Fender sticker on a non-Fender neck ("licensed by Fender" is not Fender).
2. If you modded the bass in any way, in a sale, disclose what you did.
3. When in doubt, keep the original parts, so you can sell it stock (you'll probably get more money, even if the changes were improvements).

While I generally agree with you, it is still quite curious how the company who now owns the name Fender is only too happy to claim the fame for parts basses assembled from bits built by the original Fender company. Point in case being for example Clapton's Blackie or SRV's No.1... Just saying.

I have an American Fender P Bass body with an American Fender Jazz bass neck. The body is an American P bass special so there are no CNC holes and no strings through the body. The pickups are not Fender (they are better than Fender) but every other part on the bass is a Fender part. It's a Fender parts bass. This bass plays and sounds better than any Fender P bass I've ever played.

i have a p bass made completely from genuine fender parts. My friend told me that it is not a real p bass because it wasn't built from the factory. Even though all the parts were. Anyone else think parts fenders and frankenfenders are not legit fenders even though all the parts were made by fender smh

What would FMIC tell you if you took your self made "Fender"bass to them for a warranty issue?
They would tell you that it's not a real Fender product.

is it a real p bass? sure, but is it a fender p bass? not to me -it's, as several have pointed out, a parts bass made of fender parts. i guess i agree with your friend, so maybe i'm a idiot :D

to me, fender builds genuine fender p basses, which have a legit fender serial number on them. and for all i know, may have different pots, wires and hardware than the fender parts b bass.

Well the body is loaded with stock fender pups. Only thing different is a fender neck aftermarket. Aftermarket fender tuners and bridge.

I'm not sure yet where I stand on the question. I have a few questions. Where did you obtain these genuine fender parts? From fender itself or one of their suppliers? And did you put them together in a configuration that Fender ever produced? And have you been trained by Fender to put them together?

Guess the last question is a dangerous one-if someone buys an instrument that is unquestionably a Fender, later has to have a tech replace a Fender component, does that make it no longer a Fender because it wasn't a Fender trained person who replaced it?

Glad I don't have a stake in whether any of my instruments are a genuine Fender (or genuine Yamaha, or genuine Carvin, or whatever).

Of course he would because his friends a idiot! A parts bass isn't a Fender. It's a FrankenFender no more a real P-bass than the Frankenstein monster was a real human! If you were honest you'd put a big sticker on the headstock that says "Homemade bass from Fender parts". It sure doesn't deserve anything that looks like a Fender Factory logo any more than putting a Fender logo on an SX P-bass is honest. And your friend probably won't tell you this, but I know plenty of guitar players who will, namely, that anyone who plays anything but a true FACTORY ASSEMBLED P-bass (with flats and tort, natch) is someone who is not serious about their music. So get rid of that Frankenstein bass and buy a real honest-to-God American Standard Fender P-bass hopefully paying full list price from some mom and pop storefront. Nobody who buys a bass (even a real Fender) from some big box discount outfit can be considered serious about their music. Think about it.

So do you want to end up like me playing Squier and SX? Do you wan't everyone saying you aren't serious about your music? Of course, I have a different viewpoint and I bought a bunch of SX logos from Rondo for the SX basses I refinished, and then put SX logos on my real factory Fenders! I thought that was a hoot! But then that is my less than serious sense of humor.
So if I had a fender jazz bass and the neck broke and I bought a fender neck from fender and put it on the bass is it not a fender bass ?

When the American Standard Jaguar bass came out in 2014 I was disappointed that it was not available with a maple fingerboard. I took me a month or two to formulate my crazy plan, and a couple of months more to buy the parts and put it together.

I bought both a 2012 American Select Precision bass neck and a 2014 American Standard Jaguar body off of "The Stratosphere" and put them together. I love it. The neck says Fender Precision, but it's a bit of a mutt and I'm happy with that. I happen to like mutts.
