My new bass! ...isn't it?

I we talking about Thomann here? They have a return policy that encourages people to buy stuff and return it.

I know a guy who ordered 2 preamps and returned the one he didn't want, you can bet that one went back out as "new".
I bought a channel strip preamp from them that had been opened up, the screw heads were mangled. It had a fault that I didn't discover for some time but it was an easy fix (tightening a grounding screw).

In your shoes, if I loved the bass otherwise, I'd hassle them for a discount (because 1: I'm cheap, b: you didn't get what you paid for), and definitely keep it if I could get the discount. I'd return it otherwise, if I could get 'em to pony up for return shipping.

That said, I could / would probably do that much or more damage to a new bass in under a week of moderate playing. But I'm not gentle when it comes to bass.

I suspect strongly, you're the second retail-recipient of this bass and its packing materials.

If I really liked how the bass played I would call them and tell them you want to return it. Tell them that you want your money back and that they will be paying for the return shipping due to the dishonesty. If they make a decent discount offer I would accept it and keep the bass.

Yes, it is Thomann. Apparently "Europe's largest wharehouse and biggest service center" has a "VolksWagen attitude" :)

To be more precise, it's not a floor model, it was just lying on the floor.
What is the manufacture date on the headstock?
If its Thomann I'm sure you will short it out. Just explain them and show them the pics.

The manifacture date looks like a "012 M", very hard to read, but the serial starts with "US15....".
I really hope that they will sort it out, today it was my birthday and that was the present that I got myself :( especially, I don't want to pay for the return shipping.

The bass is playing very good. Some buzzing on the 8th fret, but it could go away with the proper setup. I like it but it is not special. Nowadays I think that these kind of instruments, they all sound the same more or less, so another one could be as good as this one.
However I don't think they will offer a big discount, usually their b-stocks are like 20-30£ less than brand new. But now I know that they have their own definition of "brand new" :)

Then it is a 2015 manufacture. Anyway as I said I believe they will recognize their fault and they will replace it without charging shipping because it is obvious that
this was a floor model. I understand your frustration but at the end everything will be fine.

Just me...or does it look like the pickguard has been at one time removed from that bass? The screws holding the pickguard down look a little weird somehow for a brand new bass...
White filler around them or something...
That's the plastic film you're looking at.

To echo what others have said, send it back on their dime. If they give you any hassle regarding return shipping, get your credit card company to charge it back and let them know they can come pick up their bass any time they please but you're through spending your valuable time on their problem.

Yes, it is the film.
I'm writing the return email right now, I hope to get through this quickly and be able to buy another bass very soon.

I've purchased a brand new MIA bass, and it was nothing like that. That thing looks like a good quality used instrument, based on the damage to multiple areas of it. Not like localized damage from a factory mistake or shipping. Definitely send them those pictures and get a discount, or if you have OCD, return the sucker

Send the pictures to your retailer and ask for a real new in the box replacement or a refund or a discount.
I bought one that was a floor model a few years ago at GC, and got it for 50% of the new price because of the scratches.
And it was likely a few years old and had possibly gone out on rental at some point. B stock is never a 50% discount with a serious reason...and stand scratches are not a big enough reason for such a steep discount.
