My rented backline adventures

I predict that this thread will clearly illustrate a couple of things that many of us already know:

A working pro can make nearly anything work - and that Jimmy is indeed a working pro...

I'd be less than happy if I had to gig that "rig" - but would roll up my sleeves, get the job done, and collect my pay... I *might* be tempted the "accidentally" blow that POS up at the end of the gig, so that no one else was ever subjected to it again - but *probably* wouldn't do it...

Decided to start taking pics of the rented amps I get supplied on fly gigs as an ongoing thread, and we're starting with a real doozy! Today I'm at Queens College in Queens, NY playing a show with Bowzer. This is the amp they supplied:

Now look, I like Hartke amps and Larry is an awesome friend, but even though I'll be the last person to call myself a bigshot, at least make it a 3500 and a 410!

Jimmy you've finally answered that age old question.... :hiding:

did a festival gig last year with a rental backline,
and had to *convince* the stage mgr & FOH guy to use a DI instead of the line out on the Hartke.
The things we do for bass.............

I played a multi-band bill last year with a provided back-line. They had an elect drum kit, a very small one at that, a Hartke 3500/410 and a friggin' Mesa Triple Rec/412 for the guitard.

Needless to say, the drummer and I were less than happy about it. I think Larry is a hell of a guy, but y'all can keep that 3500.

Oh, heck yeah! Love those old Ric's too. Had the opportunity to buy one back in the 80's for next to nothing but passed on it because it was semi-hollow. I mean, come on! Geddy Lee wasn't playing a semi-hollow bass. ;-)

Actually, the 4005 model line is a true hollowbody, not a semi-hollow. That particular 4005WB is double bound (front & back) and in the original factory Jetglo (at the time, see below) which makes this one extremely rare (I have only ever seen a photo of 1 other!). I bought the bass in 1973, and like you, was dissapointed it was not like Rutherford's and Squire's (this was pre Rush, to me), but I endured the fact it was a totally different and unique instrument. I sold it to a fellow TBer in 2011 and he had the bass completely restored by a friend of mine; it now looks wonderful and in a condition I never saw it in. I gigged with that bass fairly regularly and it sounds every bit as great as any other Rick bass. :bassist:

oh dude... hahaha But at least you had a great DI

I don't have a backline rig story to rival yours Jimmy, but if I had a dollar for every venue "manager/owner" who told us that they have "four circuits" for band use, only to find two outlets on the same breaker one hundred and fifty freakin-feet-from-stage, I'd be typing this from my own small island in the Caribbean.

Don't even get me started on some of the great stages that I've encountered lately.....

Was on a gig in Paris France. First fly gig i did with this particular band overseas , just a few months after the earlier bass player passed.... It was my 2nd gig with them and still feeling out where i can add stuff... First gig was just two days earlier in Monte Carlo,Monaco
Both Guitar players and I were to have TWO cabs each, for a nice theater event... Its the Bobino theater in Paris,FR. They get Two 412s each and i get two 810s as usual. I never needed that much, but i like to ask and receive...

I always spec a ampeg 810s or equivalent for the simple reason that you can get one anywhere.
Well something happened on the language Translation .. ughh oh..

I get a call in my hotel room from our git tech that they only are going with One Cab each today..
OK no problem.. one 810 can do any gig really.. !!

I get there and both GITS have their Marshall 412s and 50 watt Plexi and a prtotype Marshall 100w head..... All I have a GK 115 cab... huh?
They not only got the translation wrong but they used the Old bass players Ryder of 115 cabs..
So here i am on a LIVE concert video shoot with a GK 115 against 2 Marshall 412s with Plexi heads.
Mr Monitor was very nice, and gave me my own dual 15 wedge..

I just had them put the 115 on a Road case so it was at ear level.. .! it was OK.. but the darn 1001RB kept cutting out. Thank god for the Wedge. The rest of the tour went fine..
Yeah i look a little frazzzzzeld at this soundcheck.. It was us and Robin Trower show.

I joke because i have done weddings with a larger rig.. HA

My friend Chad runs backline for a lot of large shows in the midwest region. He's taking backline rigs to Full Throttle for the Bike Week for Jackyl, Bret Michaels, Vince Neil, etc. Jackyl's bass player's rider says four 810 Ampeg SVTe's and two of his new GK 1001RBs.

I told him that one of these days I need to go play in his sandbox. LOL.

Anyway, in early October we'll be on the opening bill for Jackyl locally, so I'll get the opportunity to hear that rig up close and in person, although I have to supply my own backline. Ah, to be a touring musician. :D

And JUST IN CASE..... I Always fly with my Streamliner head... Ya never know if they will get the translation right in a foreign country...So i come prepared... Just get me a good cab!..
This was the following year at soundcheck time.. Different production company.. This is in Switzerland.. And i did get my 810...

Enjoying everyone's stories! But if you think I had a doozy yesterday, wait till you see what happened today!

Hershey Park, a gig we've done twice a year for years now. Usually they bring me an SVT-CL and a 410he. We were there in May, and I begged the backline guy from Clair Bros. to bring me an 810e for today's gig and he said it would be no problem. This is what they brought...

IMG_0290_zps02e5563c.jpg

That's right...a Heritage SVT-CL and a 410he. I blew up! I said to the guy, "You bring me a Heritage SVT with a 410he?" He said, "Yeah, we got 3 of them now."

I said, "What happened to the 810e?"

He says, "Oh, we got 3 of them, too. Really great cabs."

"So you have one instead of that 410?"

"Nope. Didn't bring one."

"Well who do I have to ---- to get a damn 810 on these gigs?"

Our drummer said, "That would be me."

I told him, "Well drop your pants because this has to stop!"

He does the advance work on our gigs. Apparently even though I've told him many many times I'd rather have an 810, he keeps telling them that I want a 410. WHYWHYWHYWHYWHY?!?!?! OK, so it was a darn sight better than yesterday, but while the 410he's a good cab, the H810e just plain kills. And I was DENIED!

Almost told the backline guy that the 410he isn't a good match because of the mismatched impedances, but knowing my luck, next time we play there he'll show up with a 410hlf. ARRRRRRGH!

Show off.:p

I played a gig in Montreal last year and the bass amp was like a sick joke. It was some mangled low wattage (100w) solid state Fender that I have never heard of. It sounded like crap. Luckily the Radial DIs (worth more an the amp likely!) saved the day!

My guitarist had an equally bad solid state Fender amp. We were trying to decide who sounded worse. It was a tie.

The funniest part was that the supplied drum set was somethinG Neil Peart would be comfortable playing. Great set with mics everywhere.

I really missed my Monique and Bergs at that gig.

I live in Lancaster about 20 minutes from Clair Brothers. They are one of the biggest sound companies in the business. I think it's funny that they even bother with 4x10 cabs at all.

You'd think for a gig at Hershey Park they'd automatically bring an 8x10. Of course if your drummer specified otherwise, then maybe not.

Hell, if I had known, I could've brought my Ampeg 810 out there for you.

BTW I like this thread.
