My rented backline adventures

Welp, the SVT-CL was the backup this time, and they loaded me up with a 2007 SVT-VR and a mid-late 70's SVT 810 all restored in Duratex or something like it, and I think he replaced the speakers with Legend B810's because it sounded suspiciously like recordings of cabs I've heard with them. I didn't open it up and check because I didn't feel like it. Had a too-long rehearsal followed by a show that went way over, so I was a little burned out to nerd out over speakers. Sounded fine...not as good as my rig, but fine. Thinking I might get it tomorrow, too. This was in Clearwater and the gig tomorrow is in Sarasota, and I think the backline guy does both venues. We'll see.

BTW, the middle bass isn't mine. It was a rental MIM Precision. And I didn't use my Jay Turser...Rich Spina from Herman's Hermits did.

This is hilarious and educational. It does make me curious why some guys are all about certain cabs and amp combos, when it seems, at least at this kind of gig, that you have no control and end up having to use the POS supplied gear as a monitor (in addition to an actual monitor) and a DI that you schlep along? I mean I'd rather use my practice rig of headphones and a tactile transducer than some of this shite.
Just as a point of reference and comparison, as a healthcare provider I've stopped using the really nice Littman stethoscope that cost $$$, because these days every patient has MRSA, VRE, CDiff, Klebsiella or some combo thereof and the cheap, disposable FisherPrice-o-scopes that you have to use are terrible. Solution is to get a FisherPrice-o-scope and practice with it. After a few weeks of training, I can hear everything I was missing.

Hey, it beats flying with an amp. And in a way, I enjoy making crap gear work so it's all good.

But most of the time it's really nice gear on my fly dates. Got the same VR and 810 today. It's late 70's with the original speakers. Sounds better in this theater. I heard our mix wasn't the best ever Friday night.

Back when I used to do a lot of fly dates an Ampeg svt (any variation from CL, mti, vr, and any of the rack versions) and 810 were standard. I think most back line companies have a bunch of guitar amps (twin, vox, Marshall) but for bass they figure just an svt and 810 and don't need anymore. Can't argue with that logic.

Works for me.

Nah...I've been there 5 or 6 times (Speaking Rock Entertainment Center, El Paso, TX) and that's what they had the last few times and what I've seen in recent pics.:bassist::bassist::bassist:

Welp, I couldn't have been more wrong. I walked in to see this:

What a pile! It wasn't in good working order and was very difficult to coax a good tone out of it. I was very disappointed. But I guess it just affected what we could hear on stage, so...

New entry...Sandpoint ID this past weekend. I was supplied this beaut:

Chubby Checker was on the bill Saturday, and they actually drove cross country in a bus, and their bassist brought these old gems:

He used that Dan Armstrong Ampeg for the entire show...dude must have a cast iron shoulder! Unfortunately, he had a problem at the beginning of their show with not being able to get any sound, so he plugged into my rig. But after the show, he tried to figure out what was wrong, and everything was working fine. Weird.

As for me, I was quite happy to see a 4 Pro, although usually they bring me an SVT-CL. That's cool, though...the 4 Pro is a cannon and I love using them for a little change-up. Every time I play through one, I end up wishing I had one. But if I'm going to bring a 40 lb amp, it's going to be the V4B, so I've yet to get a 4 Pro.

Total thread derail, but I just weighed my Armstrong plexi bass, and it came in at 9.4 lbs, 0.1 lighter than my 4003 and identical to a CIJ Noel Redding sig Jazz I recently picked up. I was as surprised as anyone, but I think they feel heavy because they look like they should be light...

I'd love to have that Sunn rig to play it through, though!

Carry on...

Yeah-mine is not much - if any - heavier then my other basses. The material is more dense - but it is a smaller instrument.
