My rented backline adventures

Outdoor backline season started today - at least for me. Here's what I got:

SM900 and a Goliath III cab. I've never actually gigged SWR before, and I have to say I really enjoyed this rig - powerful, articulate, and punchy. Although I didn't have to use it, I really like the idea of the EQ1 - EQ2 switch and the two sets of mid controls.

Its a soul/rock band...Here's some footage of our live act..Shows The Viper Rooms' provided back line: GK 8x10 bass rig and two Marshall 1/2 stacks

We had a funny night last night. Mrs Fish is a swanky downtown nightclub and our singer treated the audience to extra-classy discussions including "throwing up on the bar" (twice), our guitar players recently discovered (non-cancerous) lump in his testicles and our female vocalist (his wife) being 8 months pregnant with "his seed"... I was in tears at one point

No pics of the first rig yesterday since the first band was gracious enough to play well into our changeover time, but it was a GK 800RB into an SWR 4x10. I didn't really have any time to fiddle with it, and I thought it sounded OK when I was setting up, but once we got going I really didn't like it. It was middy in all the wrong places, and just sort of gutless sounding. I think I'm just not a GK guy...

Quick tear down and drive 1 hour to the next gig. Rig number two looked worse, but sounded way better! Sansamp BDDI going to the PA (which I dialed WAY back with the blend), running into a Hartke 3500 Mosfet and Eden 410 on stage. The sound was PHAT and clear with very little tweaking needed.

Our pedal steel player was loving the original Marshall JMP and 4x12 setup as well! :)

I've used that rig at the Viper Room when I played there last year. Man, does that thing sound good. There is just something about being in front of an 8x10 that's good for the soul. I know guys here are always on about their light weight cabs, and modular set ups and squeezing water from a rock, but I really want to own one, one day.
