My rented backline adventures

I came across this backline jackpot at the High and Lonesome club in Winnipeg Canada last week!

So happy to leave my gear in the van and just plug in...Sounded amazing! The head was hand built by some local mad scientist who actually came to the show and the cab was a 70's Ampeg flatback.

I frequent the Times Change(d) about once a month, and that rig always sounds amazing! I've never had the pleasure of playing there, but it's on my bucket list.

I got a backline 810 a couple weeks ago, too.

The last time I was at this bar as a patron everything was a little blurry, and I assumed the head was a -2 or -4PRO, but it turned out to be a B-4R. The head looked like it'd seen better days, so I was glad I had packed my Tonehammer just in case.

What a great combination! I had to turn up the treble a fair bit higher than normal, but once I got the articulation back it was pretty much the best sound I've ever had with that head. I could barely hear the rest of the band, but I didn't care at all! :)

Yeah, if you can tote a pre to make up for what you don't get out of the B4R, you can get a real nice tone out of them. That's about the only way, though :D Sorry, B4R fans...I love Ampeg but not that B line of amps.

They're okay. I used essentially one of those for years. With enough gain they sound decent. A little bit of working with the graphic EQ helps, too.

What helps them most of all, though, is if you put a Tech 21 VT Bass pedal in front.

Hah! I didn't even try. I just took one look at it and said "noope!", plopped my Tonehammer down on top of it, and got to work.

Even the sound guy said "Hey, are you using that Aguilar? Nice!" Haha

From the gig last night...

Now, I've never really been a Markbass fan. Didn't like the LM1, 2 or 3. Never liked the cabs. Never liked the EQ or the shaping controls. BUT... I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this SD800/610 setup. Very full and punchy sounding. Still couldn't quite get it dialled in to perfection, but I wouldn't be sorry to see the same rig again on another gig.

Apparently today's rig is going to include an SVT1000. Anyone got the scouting report on that? Jimmy M?

Got to the gig today and was surprised to find an Aguilar DB751. I had been promised an SVT1000, and wasn't to enthusiastic given what I had been able to read in the morning before leaving. So... I am pleasantly surprised to see one of the best loved heads on Talkbass. Then I plug in. Yuck. It was like having to push every note through a bucket of molasses to make it heard.

I am sure that, that mixture of speakers in the cab didn't help one iota!
