My Wife Poses the Ultimate Question

The Basses don't make her mad for some reason.. but .. Amps and Cabs make her crazy...Another Amplifier?? Don't you have one already??Where are you gonna put THAT ONE !!??...What was wrong with the last one?? .( (Arms crossed and Foot tapping)..lol..We won't go into the cords and stomps everywhere ...

I'm on the other side of the spectrum.

I had 2 basses for sale, so I could justify to myself buying a P, and my wife told me not to sell them, "why are you gonna sell?, don't sell them, the kids might want to play them some day." "Yes, you're right, the kids."

I think she just fully understands that my love for music is what keeps me sane enough to present myself as a normal guy.

When some of my friends ask me, or my parents, I just say it's a collection.
Some people collect coins, others collect watches, some people trade cars every 3 years.
I collect basses and have fun with them and keep them carefully positioned around the house so that they are also part of the decoration. And my car is 10 years old and counting. I don't drink, I quit smoking, I don't mess around with women, I work 50 hours a week.

So, f..k it, I will buy a bass if I want. Or 2.

Edit: Almost forgot, gonna retire my Ashdown and buy a Quilter bb800 and a Phil Jones C4. Oh yeah.

I have decided I need to be satisfied with what I have. I am trying not to get sucked in the materialistic culture we live in. I am not saying I will never buy another bass but I don't think constantly looking for and desiring the next "thing" is good for my soul.

So after several purchases over the past 18 months, my wife finally said those words that we all really dread, "Do you REALLY NEED another bass?" Now I know this is a running joke for those of us with chronic GAS, but now I actually have to defend myself with a foolproof response (I am in the process of ordering a custom made J-Bass). I am seeking the ultimate stone cold, show stopping, mic drop answer to this question. I like creativity and thoughtfulness with perhaps a sense of humor.

SOOOOOO TBers, lets have it

Should a painter have only one paint brush?? Should she need more than one pair of shoes to go out/training/working?

It comes down to personal preference
If you are happy with one bass one amp (maybe no amp and just DI!) then that is great
If you want 10 basses and 10 amps that is fine as well
We all have our hobbies
Bass and Amp collections have to be IMHO the best hobby in the world!

As for a response to 'Why do you need another XYZ!?' the reply is simple... Because

I'm no help to you here... but I've been there. I want a Mesa Prodogy tube head and she says no. You don't need to spend $1700 for an amp. I said I paid that for each new bass I bought.. She: But that's different, musicians should have two instruments... I don't get the logic.. If I can have two basses, why not two amps?? I even offered to sell one bass for the amp.... No sir..... ;)
She might be asking for a little more of your time (perhaps). Make her your favorite bass to play and you can have any amp you want.

Do it for the children, man!!!!!

I'm in the same boat. Whenever I show my wife a bass and ask what she thinks, she says "It's pretty. But don't you already have a black one? Get a red one."

Then I say "Red makes me look fat."

:D

But when I get serious I ask her which one she thinks I should sell. She usually says "Just buy the other one first. Then sell one if you really want to. Keep 'em all if you don't."

It sounds awesome but it isn't. I really try to keep my bass gear in perspective. These days I am a weekend warrior. I don't have $20K in kayak gear, or shooting gear, or beer n wings cooking gear. I don't need $20K tied up in bass gear.

So my life would be easier if she just said "Sell that one. You never play it anyway." :D

Actually my little daughter recently told me: "Why would you need to sell this beautiful bass just because you don't play it? Keep it and build a collection!". I like this approach :)
