I'm totally cool with anybody enjoying whatever they want. That being said...

I've always been mystified with the apparent success of Smashing Pumpkins. Every so often I'll remember to ask folks if they've ever seen them or bought any of their stuff back in the day. Not much evidence to work with there.

When Don Imus was doing radio, he'd occasionally comment on something that was unbearable to him by saying, "It makes my hair hurt." Boom!! It's impossible for me to enjoy the sound of Billy Corgan's voice. I'm happy for him and the band, I wish them well, but EEEEESHHHH!!

Yes, music was involved(and I'm not going to make any judgements, I was too old to be in their target demo when they came along), but it was an entire entertainment onslaught; they were a circus, a living comic book, a live horror show, a fireworks display, a brilliant marketing/merchandising campaign, and oh, yeah, there was a big noise on stage. And that demographic target? Younger teens who wouldn't know or care that the big noise was a bunch of recycled/mutated Stones riffs, cliched guitar leads/drum solos, and a bass player who was more of a freak show than a player. Fist pumping anthems, not really heard in rock before. Pure Barnum. The "Kiss Army" involved the fans; it was their secret club. And it worked, much to chagrin of 'serious' music fans who forgot what it was like to be kids. Much later, I finally, begrudgingly(but not taking it seriously), "got it". Still doesn't make me a fan at all, but I understand why they existed. As far as Lou is concerned, I think he did alright. There's plenty of VU covers that brought money in, especially when the world and a new generation caught up with them, plus his solo career did have a few high points.

That was, 'Was(Not Was)'...more of a project than a band as they featured various members and front people. Main man David(Weiss)Was went on to produce, well, everybody, and took over the helm of Blue Note Records. Vocalists on just one of their albums were Mitch Ryder, Mel Torme, and Ozzy Osbourne, so yeah, an eclectic bunch.
This is my favorite track from them, something some of us can relate to...
