I kind of agree with you there. I have a boutique bass with fancy woods (as seen in my avatar), but its rather simple (not boring, but elegant). I play in an indie rock band and basically play with a super P. I've had fancier basses before, and as much as I loved my crazy walnut topped Skjold 5, I can't see it being just a huge fit with my music, lookswise.
That said, if I was a fusion or an R&B player, I wouldn't have too much trouble bringing something like a Fodera or Fancy Skjold in. But for the most part I don't care what people play, as long as it sounds musically correct for that particular band.
