Jorg Schroeder - what was new in your booth, man? Details on the new rigs please?
Yeah, you sure don't want to try to get a gig with a pop diva and pull out something that takes attention away from her (or him). The blue chrome Warwick let's say, even though it's simply one colour and a common shape. I'd rather people comment on my playing, good or bad, than on how bright my amp's LED's are.
But I'm not even saying so much that some looks are inappropriate for some gigs, as I hope that's common-sense, it's that many "boutique" basses look like this clip sounds and exhibit as much visual coherency as this does musical taste & competency -

A few, even while looking wild, still have elegance and flow to the look. Benavente and especially Brubakers come to mind. Brad's is a perfect example - it's a 6'er with fancy top and a giant ramp but it looks totally classy & serious.
Personally I think at this point there's so much "me too" in fancy/custom builds that coupled with a change socially due to the coming economy we're going to see something austere like "black" command a premium over a laundry list of exotic woods and precious gem inlays. I think we'll even see many painting over fancy woods with solid colours. Garish displays of having more money than taste are "out", like people driving Hummers when gas is $5 per gallon.
While it might not seem so to some, that's totally on-topic for this kind of thread. But just to be safe ... those tiny Flea basses are a great idea. Anyone know how small they actually are?
