Here's a few Dingwall Combustion shots:

The new Dingwalls look gorgeous! As does pretty much everything else here. Not gonna take the time to say what's already been said about various blue Warwicks and other amazing instruments and gear. I must say I'm might excited for this Promethean amp business.

This is NOT a critical comment...but I have never seen an instrument that was so disconcerting to look at. I feel like I'm having a stroke or looking at some bizarre photoshop experiment. Again, I've never played one. I'm just saying, "Man...fix your camera or something". Shaking it off now....

I feel this way when I look at lefties:p

I do think that the pickguards on the Combustions throws the balance off a bit. The red one is much easier to digest with the eyes.

Re: the suspected two piece pickguard on the VF vs the actual one piece...LOL!

BTW, here's a few better pics of mine where you can see things a bit more clearly, and also the back for the battery box, as at least I had an initial question about that...

Are these jazz basses that F Bass is building going to be a custom thing or is there going to be some mass production going on to some degree? And, what price range will they be at?

I do believe George has been doing them as a regular F-Bass model since January NAMM of '08.
Yep. The reason these aren't understood as a standard model yet is because George hasn't updated his web site to have the VF product in it.

Here's the link to the product information on his web site... still currently only linked into the "News" page off the home page.

The whole fanned fret thing just confuses and bewilders me. I guess I am just the unfrozen caveman bass player but I don't get how they intonate, how the scale length works or the tuning with the fanned frets and I know the fret layout would confuse the living daylights out of me. Heck I have a hard enough time hitting a 4 fret spread on the E string on a typical bass...

Personal, irrational fears aside, they sure are beautiful basses!

Here you go... this does the best job of explaining the Novax Fanned Fret system, and it's a pretty quick read...

Personally, I'm sure the NFF system has its technical and musical merits, but clearly, it's not necessary to have a great sounding bass (or guitar).

did anyone get a picture of the ibanez seven string that was on display?

Check Ibanezrules.com.

It is a short scale (30") 7 string tuned BEADGCE. 11 mm string spacing so slapping and fingerstyle would be, shall we say, difficult.

Japanese made with Duncan pickups (Humbucker, which is splittable with a push pull volume pot and a single coil j-type)

Three band EQ, one concentric pot bass boost/cut and treble boost cut, the other concentric pot is mid freq. mid boost/cut

Strings go from .120 (low B - I can imagine how that would feel at a 30 inch scale) to .025 (high E).

List price is $2133.32, including case.

I actually kind of dig that. Well, I dig the idea of it, at least. Don't really dig the instrument, itself.

I played the red w/o pickguard in the pic... First time playing a Dingwall let alone a fanned fret bass. It would take a little bit of adjustment, but like all things you get used to. In the short time I spent with it, I already see the merits of it. Prime example is the B string... Most basses I've played the B gets a little murky past the 12th fret, but on this one they are clear as day... It really does sound like the same note played 5 frets down on the E. Whether or not I would buy one I don't know, but it was a great first impression for me. Also, the string to string tension and balance was excellent.

But as Vic mentioned in a previous post, we all know this isn't necessary to have a great bass.

That pricetag is mind boggling. Simply ridiculous. Like it should be a scene in 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' or something. Is it inlayed with platinum? Diamonds?

it's hand made in their Japanese shop.... is your labour only worth .50 cents an hour?

nice

:scowl:

custom shop/ hand built instruments don't come cheap, and shouldn't come cheap. the hands that build them are worth the money they are paid.
