I always imagined his preamp being great with true single coils. Are those pickups more aggressive than his duals? The dual coils are too smooth sounding for me.
Definitely. That was another "problem" for me with the BN5... in either SC or HB mode, I found myself wanting to really dig into the eq more just to raise the gain up than to "tune" the sound, which I generally don't like to feel I have to do. I'm sure there's lots of others that never had this problem, but I did. FWIW.

Not only are these pickups hotter (I directly A/B'd it to a standard BN5 ash/maple), but to my ears they sound a bit more focused than his dual coils. I find this bass to be TOTALLY usable in passive mode, even soloing the bridge, and using the EQ more the way I like to... just boosting some things some of the time.

Vic, what's the string spacing at the bridge?
19mm. :)

what strings are those? they look strange with the windings stopping short of the bridge...
Those are LaBella Supersteps... George has a custom set made for him, but you can also get the standard sets. They're a bit hard to find, but they're out there.

Personally, I'm not totally sold on those, and I'll at least try a set of DR's on this bad boy next go-round, but I will try them at least one more time after the DRs before deciding what I like best.

There's a whole thread about the new Ibanez line for 2009, if I'm not mistaken.
Yeah, some of the big news was they brought the Prestige model back, they now have a BTB with a maple board, and they've got an uber-lightweight (class-D) amp and combo NEO/ceramic cab line. Pretty cool!

So in 27 pages NO-body took pictures of Ibanez, Peavey or G&L? I've been waiting, and waiting :hmm: :eyebrow:

I Stand Alone

Here is a recap:

Wow, they sure are going a little Alembic with that last one aren't they? I can't complain though, IMHO it's the best looking one they've made to date. Thinner neck, dark coloring, lots of inlay, Alembic looking body... I think they have a winner.

I thought the exact same thing! It really reminds me of Stanley Clarke's "Dragon" bass! High gloss finish, neck through, loads of controls, full length inlay, dark wood choices....it looks amazing though! And those Prestige SR basses look hot too!

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but can anyone give me any details of the orange bass?

It's actually red in person. It's a Fender CS build, they couldn't shift them on eBay so they brought them to NAMM.

They're going for rediculous amounts of money, they're in the Fender 'Masterbuilt' series.

Have any one took the pics of Ristolar Instruments?

Do you mean Ristola? If so, Brian was there but I think that he was there for his other business, Bestbassgear.com. I haven't spoken to him yet but I'm not sure that he brought any of his basses along with him. He certainly didn't have a booth. If you do a search for Ristola you'll find some threads on his work though.
