NBD Squier Debut Series…

Not a bass but I did get a Debut Stratocaster. Shockingly good for the money. About 15-20 minutes of fret touch up, my own elective wiring mods and it’s ready to rock. It’s developed a spotty output, so I just got a new switchcraft to install- but that’s about all it needs! Love the black matte. I would have no problem trying one of the basses.
Rattle can painting is a sketchy approach unless you've got skills! LOL That's why I like natural finishes, much easier for DIYer to do.
Find a car body painter with a proper spray machine and you'll get pro results. Unless it's not that important...
Oh, I agree, I would like to try my hand eventually with a DIY project, and at this price point, it's not much more than the build your own bass kits on Amazon and other retailers. When/If I'm doing one that needs to come out perfectly, I work at my county's career tech high school, I would have the auto collision class do it and only have to pay for the paint and perhaps a small donation to the program. Just was generally curious overall if anyone's done it, if they needed to sand it down first, etc.
I has see some done with ReRanch rattle can lacquer paint that looked really good.
One just has to use the skills that it takes to spray using a paint sprayer gun and be familiar with the function of spay cans and their particularities. Having patients and doing the prep work and the in between sanding between coats. It can be done with good results.
When I did my Harley Benton PB50/Peeler P project, Inzane Skins provided an older copy of the book "HOW TO Create A Factory Guitar Finish With Just A Couple Of Spray Cans!" I followed the instruction to add a flat finish to the Peeler P project. It turned out exactly as it should have. Problem was I used the SprayMax 2K matte finish, which was too rough. I should have used the satin finish. I did wet sand the flat to a satin finish. I will be getting a can of the 2K Satin for a thicker, smoother finish.
I had a sunburst Debut a few months ago and ended up trading it locally.
Just ordered a black one, a long with some DR Nickel Lo Riders, and a one ply black pickguard. Looking forward to getting back in the saddle with one of these and I think it'll be a nice bigger, but younger, brother for my Squier CV Mustang. Family photo to come.

I pulled my Debut out of its case for the first time since I got it because my Road Worn is having fret sprout removal, and I have to say, it’s really a decent bass. Even if I didn’t mod it, I would still be happy, because it really seems to be a player. It sort of reminds me of my 2013 James Johnston CV Jazz in terms of build.

My black debut arrived yesterday. I got to work changing a few things up. Pickguard (1 ply black), strings (DR Lo Rider Nickel), new knobs, and a set up.
ZERO fret sprout. I am truly astonished by the neck. Super smooth.
The only thing this far I know I'll need to address is that the nut isn't cut well. The E string is cut too high, maybe the G as well. So I'll need to file those down a little bit.
Other than that I am 100% stoked.

Man, I like the one ply black PG I put on mine but that 3 ply on yours looks REAL nice.

That black pickguard on the satin black looks really sharp.
Mine is holding up wonderfully. I play it many hours each week and nothing moves, holds tune, relief is always the same. Zero concerns for me.
As another YouTube reviewer of the bass, I can say it is holding up very well. No adjustments since initial tweaks when I got it about 8 or so months ago. It is used in regular rotation at our church by another bassist. I use it sometimes too. It travels home and back with the other bassist for rehearsals and services. I also run sound and it always sounds great in pa. It is 100% stock except for the strings of course. I also use MTD, Lakland, and Fender gear and I enjoy it.
