NBD! SX 6'er

My six string arrived today. I was surprised by the quality of this bass for the money. Her name is Violet. She plays pretty well and looks new and sparkly. I only found one little nick between the nut and the E tuner. Not a big deal. I was shocked that it came with two truss rods and a gig bag. It needs some strings and a set up. From there I can dictate if the electronics need a little upgrade. I know I know, no pics no bass:

I was trying to capture the nice grain of the body and neck:

If you don't want to drop a lot of dough on a bass. Buy one of these, you won't be disappointed. From this transaction alone, I am considering buying a "P bass" and a "Tele" from Rondo.

My 6er has been sitting at the Fedex depot down by the airport since 4pm on Sunday. They claim delivery tomorrow.

Sometimes I think that online package tracking is a curse.

Yours looks nice. I didn't realize until just now that it was dual truss rod.

I didn't know about the truss rods either. Like you, once I realized I could track the package, I spent a lot of my time checking my inbox for updates. You will want some new strings and a set up. The head stock looks better in person with the 4+2.

I'm pretty sure it's NOT a double truss rod. All SX's have the "Two-way" trussrod, and all that means you is can either loosen or tighten it.

In fact, it's got two two-way trussrods, as you can clearly see on the headstock... there are two holes next to each other for the adjustment bolt. :)

What's the string spacing on these? Congratulations, looks like a sweet bass!

Sadly, there is a bit of neck dive. I am not really sure how to fix that. I was thinking of maybe putting a 1/2 lb weight on the bottom (by the bridge) of my strap? Will this work?

And a sound clip:
Please excuse my sloppy playing, I have not gotten used to the wider neck yet. I have played 4's for the past couple years.
No effects or compression at all on the bass track.
Chain: SX > cheaper Monster cable > M-Audio Fast Track Pro > Protools 7.4 Mpowered

Mine, which is out for delivery, is going to eventually get Hipshot Ultralites, which may be enough.

Another tactic is to move the tail straplock upwards by an inch or so to change the angle.

If the Hipshots don't do the trick, I suspect a strap that doesn't slide on your shoulder like a ComfortStrap will work.

Adding weight to the tail would work, but there are better ways, I'd think.

If the balance is close, perhaps straplocks will provide the tipping point. Some of the Dunlop straplock buttons are on the tall side and with the strap attached to the very end may make the pivot point move just high enough on the neck to balance out. Easier on the shoulder than adding more weight...

Nice track, good playing. I know some say trash the strings immediately, they sound decent to me.

Yes this is correct. And my experience with my other SX 6ers was that they are a bit confusing as to which way to turn them. So I when the string were off I loosened them both and then tighened them one at a time to see which way to turn the adjustment on each to put relief in the neck. The confusion is they are TWO WAY truss rods and hence you can get them "tight" with one pushing and one pulling! Not what you want. I put a card in the case with information so I won't forget it later.
As I recall you turn them both the same way for identical action.

And one more thing: Those string trees are not very good. I highly recommend changing them or at minimum sanding the corners because they seem to gouge into the strings. I just installed a stainless steel bar across the headstock in front of the nut at approximately where the old trees were and it works great. Some people put roller types in there too that also were great.

And my new 6er (#3!) is sitting over at the Fedex depot too! NBD sheduled for tomorrow!!! :hyper:

That might work, but since this is a cheap bass with an ugly headstock...

You could simply cut off the top of the headstock. That might change the balance since it's so far out on the lever arm.

Clip sounds pretty good!
I'm thinking about getting one of these and stringing it E-A-D-G-C-F.

Thanks for the suggestions! The consensus is to scrap the machine heads and string trees for Hipshot replacement parts.
I can probably make that happen.
Where can I find a different pick guard for it?
Will a drop in pre-amp like an Audere fit it? I am only asking, I might keep it passive.
Thanks for the couple of you that might have enjoyed my clip. I just listened back to it and it sounds pretty sloppy... I should redo it I think...
