Won't hurt, may well help. Lots of anecdotal "I ignored the advice and everything turned out fine" stories - lots of people don't experience any trouble at all, but I don't want to be one of the few that do (and I have had problems in the past, more careful now).
It's riskier when it's cold enough (or has been recently) that the humidity is way way low, it's usually suddenly changing both that causes trouble. So you're probably at less risk than I am here, but why risk it? Patience.
I received a bass from Sweetwater with that same warning. The problem was the sticker was on the bottom when I brought it into the house and I didn't see the message until after I opened the bass!

I got my acoustic bass last year and waited two days to open it I kept it inside the box for one day then I opened the case a tiny bit and let it sit for another day. I know it was overkill but I just paid more than I should have for an acoustic bass and I wasn't taking any chances.
I did that same when my '37 Regal (huge old acoustic, no case) arrived in December - deliveridiots couldn't ring the doorbell, it sat out overnight in a subzero snowstorm. Garage for 24 hours, inside 24 more, no problems.
My gibson SGJ showed up and spent about 4 hours outside my apartment in -35'C weather. It was completely fine when I took it out of the box; not a mark on the nitro finish. That being said, I was very lucky, and I recommend waiting until the box is at least room temp.

yup sweetwater is pretty cool this is my second bass from them, they kindof droped the ball on my last buy from them with the bass showing up with dirty rusted strings with the only excuse being that they don't carry string sets for an eight string basses but they more than made up for it on the price for this one.
I do love that they have pics of the achual basses on line and that's why I bought this one from them, id post the stock pic they sent me but Ive posted it 3or4 times allredy

I very stupidly bought a bass during some bad weather last year and it sat on the back of a truck for almost a week because we had a level 3 here and they couldn't get on the roads. It was over a week and a half late and to add salt to the wound the delivery person was a very small woman who pretty much dragged it from her truck to my door I couldn't get out there fast enough to help her.
Play this 240 times, and then you can open your box...

OP - what exactly is it in the box? Modern finished solidbodies (especially poly) are less an issue, than say, my 77 year old acoustic. 
You know, we're having a crazy cold and snowy winter here like we haven't for decades, but I have to say, I'm glad that I'm unfamiliar with the phrase "we had a level 3 here"! Blizzard, I assume?

Just seller's pics, sorry, but:
41.5" scale length, so belongs as much in the URB forum as here. I put Corelli low tension 370s on at first to be on the safe side, but it's obvious this thing was constructed for heavy heavy strings - the original ones were brass or copper wound, don't know on what core. Anyway, I'm shopping for louder heavier brighter strings. Nothing wrong with the Corellis at all, just not very loud on this - this is more of an old draught horse of an instrument rather then some dainty thin carved thing. It's a brute.
