NBD - U.S. Fender Geddy Lee

this may be sacrilege here, but the tbird and pbass sound from the austin concert were my favorite
they were thunderous

Quick update after putting Roto's on the U.S. Geddy. I'd say one difference I notice between the CIJ and the U.S. Is the E string between 1-5 frets sounds more clear and powerful. Solid bottom and still has nice growl. Using a Rush line as an example, Camera Eye during the solo where the bass walks up chromatically is much clearer without ripping your fingers to shreds, and has that really nice three-dimensional quality to it without sounding mid scooped. Much easier to get that early 80's tone. Really, really having a great time breaking this bass in. If I was Oprah I'd give all of you a brand new U.S. Geddy for viewing this thread.

It is all that. Really beautifully made instrument. I'm still keeping my CIJ Geddy because I love it, but the U.S. version exceeds it in most every way.

Either way I've felt pretty fortunate with both. I think the CIJ were pretty well done with their growing pains before mine was built. Tuners were one of the complaints I heard and I lucked out in that department with quality tuners that hold really well. Since this is the early part of the U.S. run it seems to me they're doing a good job. I haven't heard of any quality issues.

The USA models have reverse tuners, something Geddy most likely does not use on his basses. A bit weird if you ask me.

My tuners on my CIJ Geddy hold great too. It just depends on the number of wraps of string on them for me.

During the Clockwork Angels tour that was certainly the case. If you have the Clockwork Angels concert video, you can see his bass tech installing strings on his black bass (or one of them, anyway) and he's turning the gear counter-clockwise, right in the beginning of the video. However, that might have changed. It's been a couple of years since that tour, and he's been buying vintage basses quite a bit recently. Perhaps he wanted to have all of his vintage Fenders with the same tuners to avoid any confusion, and went with the reverse-winding ones. Who knows?

If it was just a 70's Jazz reissue, then it would be wrong to put reverse-winding tuners on it. It is, however, a signature bass, and in that case all bets are off.

I would buy it regardless of the tuners, if I had the money.

I'd probably buy it too and get new tuners and sell the reverse ones. I'm sure there are those who are on the hunt for reverse tuners out there..

Actually, nah, I wouldn't buy it. I honestly love my CIJ model. The black inlays/binding neck is superb for me. Only thing I would want different is a slightly thicker neck of the same shape and design. The new MIMs have a slightly thicker neck, I hear?

I did order new tuners for mine. I went with the Gotoh Res-o-lites. Normal direction (not reverse). The E tuner on mine is not good and something needed to be done one way or the other. So hopefully this will address that even knock some more weight off. Mine is a comfortable 9.2 lbs already so to maybe get it under 9? That would be lovely.

Ordered mine from Musician's Supply on Reverb. There's another one listed for ~$1529 and you can make an offer on that site! The one still there has been there for several weeks, you could probably steal it!

Musician's Supply worked with me and we came to a very nice deal so I went with it. Sweetwater was offering $1535 and availability by September but the guys I worked with were much more competitive and are shipping it out tomorrow - I'm ecstatic. Thanks for the heads up, I will post the 3TS in the classifieds probably within the next week.

I'm super excited, I will be happy to post pictures when it comes in.

Oh I would love to get one, but I'm at least a year away from a new bass, and still need to pay off the last one I got. Looking forward to seeing the pics!

You know, I love the look - and sound - of this bass. I had a couple of the "cheap" Japanese versions and really, if I weren't playing Roscoe 5 strings, I'd probably be playing a Geddy Lee jazz.

However, I also was surprised when I saw them in May and thought wow, the P bass sounds pretty damn nice.
