i still think the filter itself really is not very mutron-ish to begin with.. hate to keep throwing that out there, but at the same time, want the final product to be what the prototype isint (yet?!)

how much reworking does it look like you'll need to do as of now?

Not much, it sounds really close to my mutron right now as is.

Ok...don't nobody get mad, but how much of you guys know what a vintage MuIII really sounds like other than Bootsy recordings? And let's not go by "I used to have one 10 years ago..." since memories plays tricks on us all.

It's probably just the filter and bass output. I've owned my ebs for years and loved it but I didn't use it for a while except with my Marcus miller jazz. I started following this thread to search for a new wetter sounding filter. A couple hours ago I plugged in a bass that's also active and passive, fretless and strung with infeld flats and man that thing sounded wetter than a young (over 18 of course) girls orgasm. It really surprised me because I don't play the bass often. With my miller bas active or passive it's unusable. Filters are very sensitive animals and I hope you design the one that sounds like a mutron with all basses cuz I've always wanted one. Godspeed.

i'll admit, i havent owned one in a couple of months, so i guess my memmory could be a bit off, but i still know the sound for sure. it was the main part of my pedalboard for about a year. (a non-modded one.)

i started to ask myself exactly what you did, and question if i had some romantic idea in my head of what it sounded like, but i dug up some old recordings of myself when the mutron was essential to my board, and im definately not crazy, it was as rude and bubbly as i remember.

I just thought I'd throw that out there since many seems to know how great a vintage MuIII sounds but they don't own one anymore. Makes me wonder why anyone would get rid of such "killer" sounding filter. I too used own a vintage MuIII (unit w/AC power cord attached) but it sounded bad. I had it modded by LSound then it sounded better, but not as good as my Super Fatty, so I sold it. Hey, I'm not trying to start a war here.

i'm sure the old ones were a bit inconsistant.. mine was with the adaptor, not attached power cord, and mine was never modded.

mine however, sounded perfect. any bass, whatever, you just turned it on and actually got bootsys sound- no problem. but then theres the bypass (i had an external bypass box, cheaper than sending to Lsound.)the need for a compressor, the size, the power adaptor, and then, it is/was worth a bit more than $400 at the time, so eventually i sold that and grabbed whatever else i wanted at the time. always wanted to go back to it, though.

thats probably why everyone sold those.

UPDATE

Got the G-R IC Chip in the mail this morning. Major difference! Full functionality has been restored to my prototype pedal. :) Now it's much more usable, variable and sounds much better overall.

Of course, this IC is the 'Meatball' clone chip & not the 'Mu-Tron' clone chip. So, as expected, it's not entirely Mu-Tron III sounding. Still, it's a pretty wicked filter sound! Definitely less "wet" and more subdued than a classic 'Tron. At least the filter is responding to variable plucking and slapping dynamics now in a normal & predictable manner. It's unfair to compare it to a Mu-Tron III as this is the wrong chip, but at least we know it's not an overall systemic circuit problem.

All of this, however, makes it sound a bit more like my personal go-to HAZ Labs Mu-TRon III+. I can definitely use it now! I need more time to experiment & play the modded 3-Leaf, but I can make a few initial notes in comparison to the HAZ Labs. The HAZ has more subtle detail and a smoother decay. The 3-Leaf is a lot more bright overall, even with the filter closed. There's also a tiny bit of noise that the HAZ doesn't exhibit. Not bad noise, just a little hiss (little enough where it wouldn't be a problem in the studio).

I tried it with both 9v and 18v again. It's so hard to a/b because I need to stop playing, unplug one adapter & plug the other in, then re-commence grooving in (hopefully) the same intensity. I end up being unsure of whether there really is a difference. I may be imagining it, but the 18v may be a little bit thicker sounding. The difference is so minute, obviously, that I honestly don't see it mattering to most people (and I'm a picky, sensitive, s.o.b!).


I can't wait to see what the final version w/ correct IC chip sounds like. I'm realizing that the 'stock' prototype probably sounds a lot more like an original Mu-Tron III than I was able to detect due to the gain/sensitivity issue.

Thanks, Spencer, I'll definitely get some mileage out of this proto' over the next few weeks. I'm hoping this mismatched mod-proto will be able to dethrone my HAZ Labs & free up some board space!
