I have a TH500 and an original SWR REDHEAD COMBO circa 1991.....Is the new AG700 similar in character to the old SWR sound? Seems like it from the descriptions.....Wadda ya think?

New Aguilar AG 700!

Yes, I said it on a different thread, if the TH sounds kinda like a tube amp, the AG sounds like a solid state with huge heavy transformers, if I would compare it to other big SS heads I played on (GK 1001/800RB or Hartke HA5500, LH1000, Trace AH600 and a few others I can't think of on the top of my head) I would place it closer to the SWR SM900 than to the rest of them.
I would go farther and say, in a blind test, I wouldn't know that the AG was class D.

...I had just about convinced myself to pull the trigger on an AG700 but your comparison to the SM900 puts me right off it. To me that was a sterile amp that I had to work hard to get anything decent out of. I was rather hoping that the AG700 would be able to give me a "tone hammer on steroids" tone as well as a decent clean tone when required. Oh well...
Get it from somewhere with a 30 day return policy, or buy used at a price you can sell it for.
It's definitely not a tone hammer on steroids though, that's the 751

Good advice. Given that I would hope to pair it with a variety of Barefaced Ten cabs which are designed to have a vintage character I hope it will be a great match.

My comparison to the SM is only relative to the others, it's its own thing, not completely starile, it has a growl but a different growl from GK, the mids are still there, the highs aren't so "glassy", everything is more contained.
As for the deep switch, I couldn't touch it with the GS412 but I'm sure it would make a smaller cab sound bigger, with the 412 it was just too much.

yes with decent headphones no problem to hear difference, I think the AG sounds sweeter = better to my ears at least in the low mids

My conclusion is the demo is biased towards the AG700 as the levels are not matched at all; the AG700's volume is set considerably higher, perhaps, somewhere around 6-8 dB higher compared to the Tone Hammer 500's volume level. This alone will make it seem like the AG700 is better sounding. Let's get a fair demo here, thanks.

They were set the same, the AG is just louder.
