Not a big surprise. I had a professor in college who was a pro drummer that was sponsored by Yamaha and he said they’re the best to work with. Gear is quality, readily available all over, and you can literally get anything from grand pianos to guitars.

Might open up options if the “Ampeg” is in the head and doesn’t require the cabs.

No, not surprising. Just interesting that this new Ampeg Venture series of gear fit with where Janek wanted to go in terms of sound. There are other amp companies with global tour support (GK, Markbass, etc.) , so that's not unique to Ampeg/Yamaha.

I do think the cabinets contribute to a difference in sound, but for example I’ve also tried the Mesa D800+ and the Aguilar TH700 through the DI and my Eden and they were very different (not in a bad way at all, they’re excellent amps). So in that way, I think the head does have a certain sound of its own. Not sure if that helps.

How does the head sound when compared to the preamp? Are they the same? I'm still deciding whether to get the head or the preamp itself. If I'm not mistaken, the venture head is basically just the SGT-DI with Poweramp, right?

For the most part…the SGT-DI doesn’t have the gain knob - or the compressor, depending on the head - while the SGT-DI has the cab sims and the heads do not. If we’re talking about the head’s pre-amp and SGT circuit, I’d say it’s very comparable to the SGT-DI without the cab sims turned on. The compressor knob isn’t very useful in my opinion, compared to whatever you might have on a pedal board.

I guess it really depends on your needs. I didn’t know the Venture line was coming out when I ordered the SGT-DI, so I’m sending that back. I needed a head, so the V12 (overkill...really I would prefer a V7) fits my needs better. It’s difficult to decide between the V4B and the V12 though…there’s a lot to like about both.

As for deciding between the SGT-DI and the heads…if you already have a head that works well or at least a power amp or maybe want to go ampless, then the SGT-DI will save you some money. I think with the cab sims, it might be more useful for recording purposes too. But if you need a head or don’t like the one you have/want to try something new…why not?

Depending on your location, you can always order from several vendors and try out what you like and return what you don’t.

No doubt.. tons of great gear available..
I’ve been playing just as long and I have never needed an amp that went down to 2 ohms …
until they became available..
I still never needed a 2 ohm head but it’s a great feature and opens up so many options with different cabinet configurations… I actually use it often.

The new Venture series looks very interesting. I’ve been looking for a lightweight 2-12 cab to use with my SVT 3pro. I currently run it with a 410hlf and frankly, I’m tired of lugging it around. Maybe it’s been discussed in the thread already, but does anyone have any experience using other ampeg heads through the Venture series cabinets? In particular, the 3pro.

You may not, but others regularly need and use 2 ohm capability.

Different players have different needs, that’s simply the way it works.

That's great.

I just think a 1200 watt amp that only does 4 ohms seems really silly.

GK, for example, did it right. Two 600 watt power sections each capable of 4 ohms.

It opens up many more options. Two 4 ohm 212 cabinets, for example.
