New Avatar Cabs are up on the site

Poor engineering is poor engineering regardless of whether I personally have listened to it. I don't need to hear every single cabinet to know whether it's well designed or not. That's a fallacy that needs to stop getting repeated.
.
no it doesn't. who are you to determine if something is porely designed if it works and sounds good. i personally don't like the way some basses that are pretty damn expensive look, i don't like the way some high dollar amps and cabs sound. so i geuss i should just deem them all poorly designed. all i read on hear is "same size drivers" "stack vertically" "line array" blah blah blah. I don't like that so should i say its a bad idea,no its great for some folks. i think its a travesty to flaming a small independent builder trying to make affordable quality equipment before ever hearing the first note through one of theses cabs.dave keep up the good work!

I think TB needs to just band together and buy a cab and see how it actually sounds in the real world.

I thought the old Avatar 15's were pretty well respected back in the day? I never owned one but I owned the 212 and the 210 and I thought they were pretty decent little cabs, a little hiss from the tweeter but pretty damn good for the price. I want to hear this 1510 in the real world.

I'm glad rpsands chimed in~ Avatar is the only gear manufacturer I can think of that doesn't allow returns and offers no way to try the cabs. Someone has to buy one of these and give a report~ until then we can only speculate on how the 1510 will sound by its tech specs.

i am planning on purchasing as soon as possible as i,ve been waiting for dave to do this. i would not begrudge anyone posting a review after trying one and not like it. that would be as pompous as saying i don,t need to try it to say its a bad design. it may not be a hit but judgement should be reserved untill properly reviewed.i feel dave does his best to meet what people want and i admire any small business that does so. i think sometimes i could sell cabs to some folks buy pricing them a grand above the rest, make a 6 month waiting period and require the filing of a why i,m worthy form.

I'm still wondering if anyone really expected more than what this appears to be at this pricepoint. I mean, seriously? What we have here is likely to be a $400 cabinet. Are we going to start critiquing it with the same expectations we have for something much more expensive? I imagine it will fill the niche it's meant to. No, it likely won't sound as good as the other multi-sized driver offerings. It's a lot cheaper. Makes total sense to me.

My two cents. If I were a successful cab maker who wanted to introduce a 15" based bass guitar cab to my line, I would definitely create a 15 with a 6" or 8" mid/high cone driver and extol the virtues of the design in my promotional literature. Those of us who are already fans of this design would certainly be on board, and the others could be schooled by advertising, as they probably depend on that for their knowledge anyway.

But that's just me as I am already a fan of the Carvin LS 1503, fEarful, and Barefaced designs. I just don't get the 15/10 idea! :hmm:

I get your point, but price = quality is not true in every case. For example, there is a mega thread on the Carvin LS1503, a three way 15/6/1 cab, that many absolutely love for bass, is amenable for retrofitting the mighty Eminence 3015, or 3015LF, and is now selling for the grand price of $275. If it were $1,000, it would sound the same, mainly a great 3 way design, that can also be bi amped if so desired.

Those of you already 'on board' have taken the time and effort to learn something about how speakers work, and even if on the most fundamental level the benefits of proper design and implementation are obvious to you. However, witness the high percentage of members here who, even though offered resource bases like the fEarful threads and FAQs, remain true to the Luddite philosophy. Then consider the vast majority of bassplayers who aren't members here and don't have any higher level of expertise to rely on in their gear choices than the local G-C staff. :rollno:

That vast majority of players choose their gear by these criteria, in rough order of importance:

1. Price
2. Watts
3. Looks
4. Brand

Successful marketers like Dave didn't get to be successful by not knowing what drives sales, and where sales volume is concerned it ain't sound, and it ain't technology. He's got the price, the watts, the looks, and a recognized brand. Technology, no, but that's not his niche, and no one should expect that he'd go away from what works with his customer base in favor of something his core customer neither understands nor cares about, especially as so doing would result in a higher price and a different look.

The description of this cab seems to indicate that it is kind of a copy of the old SWR Triad cab, which, if I remember correctly had the 10 running full range, and the 15's top end chopped off a bit by a crossover (the blurb on the site talks about the tweeter and the 15 being impacted by a crossover, which suggests to me that Triad type thing). It does seem like a strange design, but I remember that Triad sounding pretty good (actually very good), both on stage and out front.

I guess sometimes things can just work that don't seem to make sense on paper. Who knows though!

You're right, price doesn't alwys equal quality, but my argument still stands. This thread has people lamenting that Avatar (a company who has built a reputation on cheaper one-size-fits-most bass cabinets) isn't releasing something comparable to the 15/6 concept. Unrealistic expectations.

To your point, yes, Carvin has released a 3 way PA cabinet that has enjoyed moderate success on this website. They are a much larger company with resources Dave could only dream of. Even so, the LS1503 began with the 6 in a separate box and it is now covered on the backside by a cheaper plastic "dish". The crossover has also had issues. Pricepoints. At a $1000, it would be a ripoff.

Behold the Bumble Bee, who doesn't know that it can't fly, in theory.
Theoretically, the cab won't offer much. It needs to be heard to really see what it can do.

Me? I'm happy with my 1503/3015lf.

+1!
Seems to me I read here at T.B., that the most popular bass cab to date, the Ampeg SVT 810, on paper shouldn't sound as good as it does.
I can only speak for the Avatar Neo 210 cabinets that I own.
I've A/B'ed them with other 210 cabinets costing 2 to 2-1/2 times the price of my Avatars. All things considered, my ears prefered the Avatars.
Will the new Avatar cabs be just as good?
NOBODY KNOWS YET...NObody has played through one...
