New Avatar Crossovers!!!

Dave told me about this being in the works a couple months ago but asked me not to mention it until it came out. He wanted me to know that he did take our suggestions seriously and was working on it. I guess this will be the end of my 4th order 24db drop in unit but hey Dave will have a great product when these are implemented on all of his cabs.

Hey LoveThatBass;
I believe that your product and Dave's new crossover are substanitially different, are they not? His being a 12 db drop (I believe), and yours being 24db should make them perform pretty differently?
I for one look forward to trying them both "just for science!"

Hmmm.......i might have to pickup one of the new back plates for my B212-i could use the escuse that one of the screws holding the speakon connector in place is gone.....yeah that'll work.

If i wasn't leaving my big rig at home while i'm at college-the 2X12 Neo would be a great addition to my setup. Oh well-i'm excited that it'll be available...and a good chunk lighter than my B212 when it comes out. :bassist: Maybe if i add a light weight rack setup down the road i'll pick on up. Hmm...

Keep up the excellent work Dave-it's greatly appreciated by those of us who really dig your products while giving us new things that we absolutely MUST have. Once i get out of college/find out what i need better-there's a good shot, you're getting a few more orders from me. :)

So what's all the stuff on the new Avatar board. The 2nd order crossover should be one cap and one inductor. Or maybe two caps in parallel? Does he also have a low pass to the speaker? And are those resistors padding the horn in addition to the L-pad?

Yes, he has a low pass to the speaker.
The resistors are padding the horn in addition to the L-Pad.

After to listening to you wonderful guys here on talkbass.com, we improved our input panel by including a full 12 db crossover( cap and coil ) for the top of the bass section and a full 12 db for the bottom of the tweeter. In addition, we padded down the tweeter section 3 db so the tweeter is more closely matched to the output of the bass speakers. The tweeter will now reproduce less amp hiss , handle more power with the steeper slope, be less bright and the tweeter volume control will sound more natural in the center position rather than having it turned way down. Also, with the very top end filtered out of the bass speakers, the overall tone will be more balanced and slightly less middy. I was getting ready to change the crossover on mine to a 4th order when I realized I had one of the new ones (B210 Neo). After messing around with my EQ and the tweeter on my GS-112, I convinced myself I am happy with the Avatar crossover.

I have the parts for a 4th order and will anxiously await other reviews. I am naturally really lazy.

Nope. The attenuation comes from the resistors. It just so happens that most manufacturers mount the resistors on the same board as the crossover.

The low pass on the woofers is interesting. I usually don't bother on bass cabs because the woofers inductance takes care of itself for most bass-worth drivers. If it adds a little bit of bark and bite, so be it. To me that's not a bad thing and if too much, can easily be fixed. It's a simple experiment to bypass the LF filter to the woofers and if it were me, I'd try it both ways.

In theory, these cabs should sound more "traditional" as a result. The new cabs should also sound better than the old when playing a CD through them, something I like to do just for my own reference points in the frequency spectrum.

Dave can I ask why you went for a Magnetic Bar core inductor? I'm not a fan of them for high wattage applications. They work but air core inductors work better IMO.

I'd say there is still a market for your product. There's a huge difference in both the sonic quality and the driver protection offered by a 4th order versus a 2nd order high-pass filter. Your rig is still a step-up accessory.

I fully agree. For those who do not know, Bill Fitzmaurice talked me into making a 4th order crossover to solve the problems my 2nd and 3rd order could not. I now have them in both B115H cabs.

So could anyone give me a picture of the old crossover? I bought my Avatar used, and the guy said the crossover had been modded, but when I looked inside I'm not sure if it was. There was only one capacitor to be found, and it was hot glued to the plate.

I suppose it could be a different capacitor, but it just looked stock for some reason.
