Before I committed to purchasing the more substantial machine, I actually designed and built a small cnc from the ground up to make sure I didn't hit any road blocks. It cost me around 300 dollars, and was great for learning the ins and outs of getting everything to work.

What plan did you use for your homebrew? Is this available on line or in a published book?

I didn't use any plans. I designed the thing from the ground up myself. it was a funny machine. It was all MDF and old printer parts and some stepper motors that I purchased online. oh and the y axis was plexiglass, the least stable part. The craftsmanship was good, but the parts just flexed way too much.

It worked though. I cut out a tiny guitar body that now I use as a coaster

I'm close to finishing the neck. Here is a good shot of the indexing dowel at the nut end. Dowels are your friend when mating parts.

When I glue the fingerboard to the neck, I clamp the entire thing to a huge hunk of aluminum that I had machined to have a 10" to 16" radius. It's close enough to accommodate most radii when clamping. This also has the benefit of making sure the neck and fingerboard clamp together with both being flat.

It's also useful for leveling frets on my 10 to 16" radius guitars.

So, I clamped the crap out of it.

The neck and body finally get a test fit. They feel nice. The neck fits the pocket very snug.

I inlaid the flower using super glue and ebony dust:

I cleaned it up with a file, then the orbital sander with some 220, then 400, then 600:

I should have sanded the shells from the bottom first to thin them before gluing because after flattening them I revealed a few voids in the shell. You win some you lose some. It still looks nice though. I oiled the fingerboard as well.

I then applied shellac to the back of the neck and headstock. My curly maple laminations are bookmatched, which I think adds a nice touch.

I thought you all might get a laugh from seeing the guitar coaster I made with my test cnc machine I mentioned. Full scale guitar for reference.

We'll see if I can finish it. Still have to fret it, sand and polish the body, shield the cavity, assemble... And I forgot I have a concert today, so might run into Monday. then I have to take a bunch of good pictures, video, recordings
