New Bergantino Neo Line; Pt. 2

now, THAT'S the answer I wanted to hear. :hyper:

rodl2005, have you had the chance to use your Studio Bass with any of the Berg cabs by any chance ? I thought that you had at least one.

I knew that the Studio Bass only has a single 8ohm tap, but my own long experience with tube amps says that it should be ok at 4ohms. I know that tube amps put out their rated power at either ohm-age.

Yep-regularly with both the NV412-superb, & sometimes with either 1 or both AE112's - works great with em.
It's a great amp & works well with any decent cab.
The footswitchable active eq or "2nd channel" is a great feature too.
Can get a fantastic grind outta it-power tube- at ok volumes too-depending on ur cabs.
Thru the NV412 I've generally got plenty of clean headroom, but play it thru smaller cabs & pump it.
As John K says - I think it's Fenders best bass amp- especially at the "mid" power range.

Just FYI, dispersion (which is really only an upper midrange issue) will not be any different in any meaningful way. Maybe slightly better on paper with the 'true vertical' CN112 x 2 stack, but nothing you would ever notice.

The CN drivers are much more upper bass meaty than the wider, more relaxed low end of the AE112 cabs, so no problem there. I have not heard the CN112, but it should easily outperform the AE112, given my experience with the AE212 versus CN212.

Sounds like the modular CN112 x 2 is what you want if you have a lot of very small gigs.

I have done gigs like the one you have mentioned; small jazz club, coffee house setting, and the CN 112 kills. It sounds great a low volumes and when pushed. I also had the 112 EX and ER, and IMO the CN 112's performs as well as both of those cabs at a fraction of the weight. When you pair the CN 112's they are as loud as the CN 212, but IMO with a bit more bottom. The CN 112's are easier to transport and sound amazing through every amp I have used with them.

Alright fellow Berg fans, time to sway me one way or the other between a CN2x12 and 2 CN1x12's. Obviously aware of the transport benefits of each setup, now for tone...

The cost difference is substantial, but I'm willing to spring for the 2 cab setup if the tone and dispersion differences prove to be worth it.

My main question is whether or not 1 CN 1x12 can cut it on a low volume gig...think cafe jazz, maybe with light drums. I currently have an HT1x12ER and it is capable of handling either of these situations beautifully...but I'm interested in seeing if I can get similar volume(I know about the tone differences) while also shedding weight in my rig.

I also had trouble with the attenuated low end of the AE2x12 cabs I had, but loved the low volume low end of the AE1x12....will the CN get me in a similar low end ball park as the AE 1x12?

Thanks all!

Grady

Opps, I responded to Kjung and meant to respond to you. Read my response to him. Feel free to PM me if you need additional information.

I've heard this pairing of amp (TH500) and cabs (CN112 stack). Excellent!

I'm consolidating my gear collection, which is practical(as far as space is concerned) for me, and a fun way to act on some gas. In doing so, I've also decided to go light again. I really love the tone of my ht1x12er and ht322 especially when paired with an Aguilar DB750, but my back has been sending not so subtle messages about lifting such gear on a regular basis. So, CN cabs to replace my HT's and a TH500 to replace my DB750 and TH350 sounds like the no brainier move.

To keep the gear churn going, I'm also pondering a Sadowsky metro 5er to replace my fender j and p basses so I could go from 3 to 2( the Fodera isn't going anywhere!).

It's a great time to be a bass player!

Alright, the funds are free'd up for a Berggie CN purchase. I am still a tad torn between the modular approach or going single cab solution. I really like the idea of a one trip in and out of any gig, between neo cabs and an igig bag, that will be my reality. I also have a great gear cart that will work with the CN2x12 perfectly...Between price and the ultimate consolidation approach....I'm wondering if there is any reason to spring for the two cabs over a single CN2x12. I will likely be pulling the trigger before an NYC visit now...any pros and cons I'm not considering?

IMHO the only reason to go modular, given the fact that the 212 is so light already, is if you do some gigs where a single 12 is enough. Then it makes sense. If all your gigs require 2 12's though I'd get the 212.

Just my $.02! ;)

Cheers,
Liam

Liam makes a great point. BUT ...if the 2x12 is light enough and easy enough to move around, the footprint is the same. All it has to do is play really well to the smaller quieter gigs ...in which case you have a single cab for all occassions ...that's cheaper than a pair.

I will say the single cab sounds different than a pair of stacked 1x12's. And I felt the single cab was perhaps more articulate and might cut better in a band mix. The pair of 1x12's had a bit more 'boom' ...which for me is not needed. The CN212 has plenty of low-end whoop butt! You can add EQ and WHAM, you got Fat, supportive low end from a single CN212.

A pair of small, light 1x12's gives you the ability to grab one and gig or rehearse with it when that's all you need. Is a single CN112 easier to carry than the CN2x12? Yes.

A pair of 1x12's also allows you to load your vehicle differently. That might be helpful.

Is a CN212 cheaper by quite a margin? Yes.

I think that the modular approach makes more sense with heavier cabs (or if you ever have a desire/need to use your cabs as a mini PA - which I tend to do with my Bergs! :D).

In the context of the CN series, I'd say more factors lean in favor of just getting one CN212, as opposed to two CN112's.

As much as I am a fan of modular, in this case I'd say CN212 unless you really need an ultra light cab. If I didn't have my Baers, I'd probably get a CN212 and use it on every gig since as Gary and others have noted, the footprint is the same as a pair of CN112s and at 46 lbs it if pretty manageable. If it were over 50lbs, I'd say modular. But also depends on where/how you gig and transport.

This is pretty much the conclusion I've come to as well. I think the one cab solution and price difference shift the scale in favor of the 2x12. And consequently, I will be ordering one tomorrow.

tend to agree the one cab option makes more sense and I found it had a more complex, refined midrange that i think will cut better in band mix opposed to a pair of 1x12 cabs stacked. The stacked 1x12's can get a little 'boomier' ...which is great if you want it, but the CN212 takes EQ really well.

I like to dial back and favor the bridge PU 100% to 75% neck and bump the low EQ 10% on my nordy Active pre. That gets nice punchy growly low end that is supportive, but still focused. The CN212 should be awesome in that regard for you.

Ahhhh, you're making me miss my Nordy PJ 5 now!

Still shopping ideas for a 5 string "traditional" compliment to my Fodera 5...another one of Carey's basses is definitely in consideration.

Grady

Heck yeah! The only other 5 string J bass I played that I really loved was a stupid expensive Alleva Copollo. It was VERY good. But I didn't feel it was $3K better than my Nordy VJ5C at all. Just different.

Congratulations...you really couldn't go wrong with your choices. I respectfully disagree that the CN 1x12 are boomy. I have a Taste knob on my Black Jag 900, that all I have to do is turn it counter clock wise, and there it is, the sweet spot. For me and those who may live in urban areas, who often may take a cab to a gig or rehearsal, along with your bass its a ton easier moving a 1x12 cab than a 2x12, or if you have a small car. But the 212 is a great cabinet, and sounds great. Your fodera will sing. A friend of mine has an Emperor, and loves to come over to my house to play through my Berg cabs. Enjoy.

Hey Virgil, please don't misunderstand. I don't think the CN112 or stack of Berg 1x12's is boomy. I was trying to say I felt like the low mids were perhaps a bit more authoritative compared to a stand alone CN212 cab. The CN212 was actually more midrange oriented, but had PLENTY of low end for my wants and needs. That was the point I was trying to make. The CN1x12 or stack of CN112's can be very articulate. But for some reason, I felt like you can get maybe even MORE supportive low end. Does that help clarify the point I was trying to make? For that matter, I imagine you can EQ the stack to be nice and articulate and sweet.

All Good. Just different flavors.

Good choice! I can't tell you how much easier it is to lug a single cab to gigs rather than two.

My situation may be a bit different than most, but my car is not parked right outside. It's down the street an 1/8 mile away. I have to roll my cabs over cracked sidewalks, off of a curb, then back onto a curb, and down a half flight of stairs. Two cabs wasn't bad, but it wasn't fun with them bouncing around on the cart. The single cab completely eliminates that. I love it. Plus it's just faster and easier to carry one thing instead of two.
