New Carvin P bass, about time?

Maybe I'm weird, but I really like the styling of the PB series. It still has the long horn, but it's not all pointy. I hate the fact that looks matter, but I live in this world and they matter.

This PB will be more at home in a classic rock/blues setting than my Bunny 6, or an SB for that matter

I think Carvin did a great job looks-wise with the PB, especially the 5 string. I never really got into the neck through basses, but I tried an SB and it sounded great.

I actually like the new body shape, more than the B's for sure. Need more time to decide if I like it more than the SB's or not. I'm not running into traffic with ketchup or anything, but I dig it.

To me it looks like they took a P body and put J pickups in for the B's. Now they have taken a Jazz box and put a P pickup in it. I guess to be safe from law suits.

People rank on custom builders coming out with a P clone, but Carvin does essentially the same thing, and everyone is ga-ga.

I dunno. I guess it's ok, but it at the same time screams "me too". It's just not different *enough* to me.

Boutique companies like Sadowsky and Lakland make actual P bass clones all the time, and no one criticizes them for it.

It's pretty simple. This bass is on par with $3000 P bass inspired basses, but costs a third of that. So for the folks that always wanted a Sadowsky or Lull P Bass, but couldn't afford it or justify the spend. Now they have this option. That's pretty exciting.

Come on now everyone... Let's just be cool to one another. I personally think Carvin makes a great instrument. I own one and I want another. Been waiting for this P-Bass from Carvin for a long time and it's finally here... Unfortunately I'ma gonna haveta wait a bit before I can justify getting one. Maybe if I get it P/J combo with active electronics 5-String then sell my LB75 I can justify it that way... Hmmmm...

It's everything from a passive P-bass to a passive PJ to an active P or active PJ. All of these for less money than comparable basses from other companies, and with a huge list of available options. THAT'S what people are excited about.

Lest people think I'm just a Carvin fan boy, I'll let you know that I have a Lakland Skyline Duck Dunn P-Bass that is, for me, the best P-Bass I've ever played. I would be stunned if Carvin's new PB matches my Lakland. I'm planning on getting a PB4, though, because I'd like to have an active PJ. Lakland doesn't make one in my preferred price range, and neither does Fender. I have confidence that the PB4 will be a high quality product, and I already know that the preamp is a winner, as it is the same one currently used in the SB series basses.

Time will tell whether Carvin has a winner, here. It will be quite a feat if they can match the impact their SB Jazz style bass had.

pretty spot-on, IMO. this fills a much needed gap in the market for people who are looking for a customized, boutique quality P but dont have the means to buy one from one of the high-end guys.

I'll have to take your word for it sir I like Carvin's stuff but I just can't get excited when anyone offers a new interpretation of a P or J.

This is exactly right - to me it's an active PJ5 with a swamp ash body and birdseye maple fretboard (with the Bunny headstock). There are so many options here everyone is looking at a different bass. It's really as far from 'another P bass clone' as you can get.

I think a good portion of the excitement is that Carvin listened to requests and gave us something we asked for.
