New Carvin P bass, about time?

I just got in a new guitar from Carvin yesterday and while registering the warranty I filled out in the comments/suggestions portion: "P-bass pickup option"....and got the email with the announcement about an hour later.

Now that's fast service! :p

It's close, but I can't get over that pickguard - it throws off the harmony of the bass's design for me. It looks too closely scrunched up against the pickups on the bridge side, with too sharp of a corner above the pickups, sort of a half-hearted extension on the top horn side, too close to the knob that's closest to the bridge. If I squint at a natural-finish one, the shape and style remind me a little of an early Wal bass with pickguard, which is a nice association.

Kudos to Carvin for offering good-quality stuff at comparably reasonable prices. I hope they do very well with this one.

People rank on custom builders coming out with a P clone, but Carvin does essentially the same thing, and everyone is ga-ga.

I dunno. I guess it's ok, but it at the same time screams "me too". It's just not different *enough* to me. At least the SB went somewhere with the shape to stand out, regardless of that too being at its heart, a clone.

I'm not normally a PJ guy but IMO the pickguard shape makes this bass look much more balanced with a J in the bridge than without.

I also think the 5 string headstock looks MUCH better than the 4 string which looks too thin to me. I wonder if Carvin would build me a PB4 with a PB5 headstock?

Great - right after I finally got a usable P5 by installing a Lawrence P46 in my Squier "Precision Standard". On the whole, I really dig it. As a p5 fan, it's nice to have some more options - like the squier vm that will hopefully be available here. I too am really curious about the p'up. I assume it is a blade style; I wonder if the halves are symmetrical under the shells?
