New Carvin P bass, about time?

It's not just me then...there is something not-quite-right about the shape. Of course, this is probably because we're expecting it to look more like a Fender P, and Carvin don't want it to look too much like a Fender P...but there is something a bit unsettling about it. Ticks all the boxes for a good-looking bass but still gives me the creeps a bit.

It's a bit like when you look at a face that's too symmetrical and it freaks you out slightly...

To me, it's not totally off-putting, but it looks a little like a standard P shape that got left in the sun and warped a little. Maybe the upper horn is a little funky like the Fender Boner. The B40-50 shape would have crossed over nicely, IMHO. Kind of unusual for me to nitpick on this sort of stuff, but maybe it will pass. Anyway, it will get totally dissected and analyzed here on TB before long ! :cool:

I still really like the new body. I remember when the SB series came out and there were a lot of people who thought it looked "off" because it was different and new. Now people seem to like the look a lot. This new body style is a lot less radical than the SB series.

I think that if they just added the P or P/J option, along with an optional pick guard to the B40 and B50...
They would have had a grand slam.

I would have opted to not get an SB4000 built and would have gone with a B40 P/J with pick guard.

Yeah, that's the kind of thing I mean - the more I look at it, the more I warm to it. I think my initial reaction was "oh, that looks like a Fender...but something's not quite right." But I think I'm getting over it!

My guess is that the MM option will show up in time. They might even do it now if asked nicely.

Personally, I think something like the Carvin MM pickup would probably be a better match volume wise with a P pickup than a normal J in the bridge position.

This is one of the reasons I love the older Fender P Deluxe models with the big double J humbucker in the bridge position.
