New Carvin P bass, about time?

Carvin always does something a little weird. Here, they look to be using the same pickup on both the 4 and 5 string. I wonder which half covers the A string on the fiver?

WOW. I used to rag on Carvin many years ago after not such a great experience. But the SB basses impressed me so much that I have one on order, due in August. And now a 5 string P bass from Carvin? That's just awesome. One thing though: they don't offer chambering! Once that option is offered, I'll be in serious danger of ordering another bass I can't afford.

Neck-throughs only, I'm pretty sure.

I am dying to get a look under that pickup cover. Apparently it's a blade design, and I'm curious to see if there is any overlap/doubling up of the magnets under the middle string(s).

I've been babying a product suggestion thread on the Carvin Forums for a couple of years on this. Along the way, I had a photoshop wizard over there do some mock ups. I figured, hey, if THEY get GAS, it just might happen. Not saying it was me or the thread, but it had to have helped a LITTLE bit. RIGHT? I held out for a reverse P but we don't have that (yet).

Maybe they also saw this one I had done 18 months ago or so and helped show what people will do to get a P with Carvin playability. It just became a whole lot less unique, but the Wilkins pickups are killin' (and it's on the way back to Pat for a Pink Metallic paint job.)

"The passive SPC split P-type humbucking pickup is designed for both 4 and 5 string basses. Each coil incorporates a single large Alnico V magnet and produces a tone so huge that it emulates built-in active electronics. Vintage plain enamel wire is used for its sweet and natural well-rounded bottom end, full punchy mids and dynamic highs. But what about where it overlaps or doubles up under the A and D on a 4 and the A on the 5?

Both basses are going to be in the 8lbs range..like the B40 and B50s

I just spec'ed one out for fun. Ruby Red quilted maple on a P-bass would be the bee's knees. I don't like the bottom section of the pickguard where the knobs are. It doesn't have a .... sexy look. I don't know if they are trying to avoid a lawsuit or something, but I would redesign the pickguard. I like the look of the SB4000 better, as a J-bass-ish copy.

Tough call.

I was thinking along the lines of Munji's Lakland, but both of those look good. Needs another string and the J in the bridge though

FWIW, My little B50 has knocked a Sadowsky Metro and 3-4 Lakland Skylines out of my arsenal...

i've had carvin on my radar for about 10 years now but haven't commited to getting one made yet. from what i've seen here, the genereal consensus is carvin gives you boutique quality at an off-the-shelf price.
