New Carvin P bass, about time?

I'm torn between ordering one of these in the next few months and a G&L LB-100. The Carvin would only be a few hundred cheaper. I'm not entirely sure it's worth it especially if there are yet no reviews. I'm more interested in how the pickups sound.

There may not be that much of a difference in price.

I already priced the Carvin via their builder. The Carvin I wanted was around $1100 and the G&L I want is about $1350. Not that much of a price difference for me to pick one over the other solely based on price.

I'd have to wait if I placed a custom order. I believe that's at least 60 days. I think Carvin is the same, about 8-16 weeks.

The Tribute series is, but the U.S. You can custom order just like with Carvin, though Carvin has more body wood options, headstock options and you can get block inlays. Other than that you have the same types of choices, though with G&L you can pick different necks. Carvin allows you to get different neck construction (5 piece etc. and radius) but that's it.

But hey...a P bass with a tilt back headstock and no nickel plated disc just ain't right, doggone it anyway.

Carvin updated their FB page today to show the addition of the MM style humbucker to the PB4 and PB5. So now you can have either a P, P/J or P/MM configuration in either active or passive!

It shows the HB MM style pickup in the picture, but says SB (their soapbar pickup designation) in one description, and HB in the other. Last I looked, the bass builder listed the option as SB. Well, they will sort that out quickly, I'm sure. This goes to show they are looking to provide what the customers have been asking for.

I wonder if they will be making an overwound version of the HB to give it more output, like they are doing with the special J99A they are using for the PJ combination. I guess I'm glad I haven't ordered yet, the humbucker bridge option is something to really consider.

Awesome. All they need now is a Reversed-P option to move that P-coil a little farther from the HB and they would have it all!

You knew it had to happen.

It's cool, though. We all want what we want, and even Carvin can't give us every option we might dream to have. I admit that I would love an LB70 with the P/J option.

I'd be shocked if they offer a reverse P, as it would force Carvin to double the number of unique pick guards they need to stock. Adding a HB bridge pickup option was only a matter of paying someone to update their CNC program - a fairly inexpensive one time cost.

The P pickup on other basses (other than the SB series, which has the same pick guard problem) seems much more likely.

Carvin seems to go out of their way to minimize the number of unique parts required to build their product line. Smart move, IMO.

I totally agree. I was just being 'that guy'. If someone wants a more specialized config than the multiple ones they already offer, then they can order it unrouted and go do it themselves. Carvin already seems to offer far more options than anyone else as far as P/J configs that aren't several thousands of dollars.

I'm actually more interested in hearing what that P pickup sounds like on a 5 string, and am looking forward to some reviews!

Same here. I've very interested, but not quite brave enough to put up the required cash without hearing some reviews first.

This is why Talkbass needs Jarrett.

The reverse P will only put the bass side coil closer to the HB pickup. They just trade positions.
