New Carvin P bass, about time?

For my basses without a mid control I use a Boss GEB-7 EQ pedal. I don't see a reason to avoid an otherwise good bass just because it has no mid control.

I don't really understand why you'll buy a passive bass (which has no mid control), but won't buy an active bass without a mid control.

Also, if you have a two band EQ on a bass you can effectively control the mids using the bass and treble controls. Boost both = mid cut, cut both = mid boost.

I'm pricing out a PB and noticed a glitch in the bass builder. It is placing a $40 charge for an invisible option that I didn't select. Based on its placement it appears to be related to the fretless option. Even if you don't select it you're still getting dinged for it, only its listed with a dash and no description.

Tip:

1.) Use the builder to spec things out
2.) Save/Print the final page
3.) Always call the order into an actual human being at Carvin. Always.

I noticed that bug in the bass builder recently, too. Sometimes, with certain combinations, I've noticed it doesn't deduct the full $100 in free options, either.

I love black limba but if I were going to get it I would almost want to pick out the wood myself. Each piece of wood can vary so much. Sometimes it's really bland looking and other times it looks like something designed by aliens from outer space. :D

There are a few bugs in the PB4 ordering process. Notice there's no fretless option. The first mention of it is whether you want ghost lines (normally, you'd select fretless first). So, the result is you cannot build an unlined fretless PB4 online. You have to call, which is fine (unless you want to order at 1:00 am), but this is a bug in the process.

Also, why no option for a metal pickup guard/cover/horseshoe like on the SB?

The fretless option problem is the opposite on the LB70, there's an option for fretless, but none for lined fingerboard.

Carvin changed the way they name the various bass models several weeks back, and changed the bass builder at that time. I guess they haven't worked out the kinks yet. :rollno:

This just reinforces the fact that calling to order is always best. The bass builder is great for idly dreaming of your next purchase, but when actually ordering, use the old fashioned telephone and talk to a living, breathing human being. ;)

I was wondering why there were no chrome pickup or bridge covers, too. Seems like a natural option for that bass, although NOT for me. :)

I have that concern as well. I like the more radical looking pieces. Might have to be something I do on a Warmoth build someday. I have a similar concern with rosewood as well. That would be my preferred finger board material but their image samples all look so light and reddish. I hope I can at least request a dark piece for an upcharge?

Just used my PJ Configuration Carvin on a Beatle sounding Rock tune today in the studio. Active and with only the P pickup it sounded great in an all-guitar band track. Cool bass!:bassist:

Carvin has a process where you can have them match colors for paint jobs and/or go for this type of figuring/not that in wood grains. They will go through their wood inventory by hand for a charge and do this for you.

Are you running the pickups balanced in any situations, or are you usually favoring the P? I ask because I've always wanted to try a PJ, but I also wonder how often I would really want the J.

The J comes in handy when I'm doing a live gig and I want a little more high end. I tend to evenly balance the pickups in those situations.
BTW, the P pickup is loud! I had to dial back the gain in my preamp from what my SB5000 uses to not clip, even passively.

I'd buy a passive bass, its easier to change the tone with a tone knob vs a 2 band active EQ IMO.

So I'm back to looking at passive but it seems others prefer it active
