New Darkglass Compressor: The Hyper Luminal Hybrid Compressor

Awesome,I’m running the Voodoo Lab Pedal Power x4 so I have plenty of good current for my group on my Dingbat Tiny.

Woo woo.... one more kid to wake up and I can start making racket and playing with my new toys.

The HL pulls double duty on both my bass and guitar board. I originally bought it for my bass rig but after watching that demo, I started using it on guitar and haven’t looked back. I was previously using a BOSS CS-2, so it’s quite an upgrade IMO.

Question: Does the guitar option in the Darkglass suite change certain parameters behind the scenes? I’ve noticed that the compressor setting values are the same across bass or guitar mode, but maybe I’m missing something. Or is the guitar mode more of a label so that you know which instrument you’re loading from previous saves?

To anyone having issues with the HL pedal being powered by the Voodoo Pedal Power 2... I was having an issue where the pedal's lights would blink and it would make a weird screeching noise. Doug and company sent a replacement.

Still same issue, THEN I went to Voodoo's website.
I had forgotten about the dip switches on the voodoo PP2, All the switches were in 'normal' mode, I switched #5 & 6 to the "up" position and the pedal works fine. Also, I am using a two-to-one cable using both ports 5 & 6.

Curious to see if anyone has the same results.

I've got one on the way, probably just after the weekend. It would be nice if they could make it switchable on the fly between bass/guitar optimization, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's still a great compressor for both roles even if it wasn't switched.
As someone using it for both, any idea how well that would or wouldn't work?

I haven’t tried the HL in bass mode on guitar, but it’s worth a shot. I noticed in the suite software that guitar mode has the same setup parameters as bass mode, so I don’t know if there’s something else going on behind the scenes or if the modes are simply labels that make it easier to identify what settings are for what instrument, when you load saves.

I relate to what your saying, as easy as the software suite is to use, it would be nice to be able to rip off the bass board and put directly on the guitar board, without the software in between. I’ll give it a whirl, on my next go around. FWIW I have all three settings set to fixed attack with adjustable release. I’ve been meaning try the factory default mode on guitar. I’ll report back on this.

Ive been somewhat underwhelmed with my HL. Its my first compressor so I dont really have a reference.

I'm powering it with a 1-Spot 9 (and 5 other pedals). Is this sacrilege?

Should I supply it with its own power? I have a bin of old AC adapters. What is the sweet spot for Volts and Amps?

I used the Hyper Luminal in the studio still in the Bass setting the first night and couldn't tell any difference the next night when I'd had time to change to the Guitar setting, but it's working much more like what I'd wanted. Very wide range of compression available and I'm glad to have sold off my Keeley and gone with the Darkglass.

I'm running mine, with no problems, off a One Spot, which also powers my Drybell Vibe Machine and NUX Atlantic.

Compression really is a different beast when compared to just about any other effects pedal you can buy, which are almost all designed to 'do' something audible to your chain. A great compressor is by and large for operating invisibly, making it one of the least understood of anything else in the effects chain.

Thanks. Im sure my untrained ear to compressors is the issue. When I asked my sound guy at church for a general tip on dialing in the right amount of compression, he said to add more compression until you hear it clamp down on the note, then back it off a little. My problem is, I dont hear any "clamping".

The FET mode with all four lights on is probably the easiest setting to 'hear'. Maybe sit down with him for a little bit when you get the chance and see what his thoughts are.

Turn the 'blend' and 'compression' knobs fully clockwise. Start with the other two knobs at noon. You should hear clamping no matter how you have the lights set.

Does Hyper Luminal still have issues with certain power supplies? I'm taking one home for the weekend testing, and my PS is Truetone 1 Spot Pro CS7. I've been using EBS Multicomp in tubesim mode for a few years now, just slight compression, so I'm gonna compare the two, and if HL wins out, it's gonna kick Multicomp off the board.

My Hyperluminal has been sounding great, except at a rehearsal recently when I plugged into the amp and the sound from the HL sorta cut out, then signal didn't get through, and then was kinda buzzy with low output. I swapped out the power cable between the HL and my Xvive power supply (9v, up to 300 mA output) and it worked fine. Then at soundcheck at a gig a few days later, it happened again - I jiggled the (new) cable and problem cleared up for the show. Just odd and slightly worrying...
